Liverpool Prepares for Champions League Clash Against Atletico Madrid

Liverpool’s new era under Andoni Iraola gets its first European examination on Wednesday night – and Atletico Madrid could feel the full force of a squad already being pushed to its limits.

Iraola ready to shuffle the pack

The win at Ipswich on Friday gave Iraola lift-off in the Premier League, but it also underlined the physical demands of his high press and rapid transitions. He knows he can’t run the same XI into the ground by September.

So he’s rotating. Deliberately. Aggressively.

Jeremy Frimpong and Ronald Araujo were both name-checked in his post-match interview at Portman Road, the Liverpool boss making it clear they are central to his plans from the start in certain fixtures. Atletico at Anfield feels like one of those nights.

Frimpong, left out against Ipswich, is pushing hard for a recall. His pace and vertical running from deep fit Iraola’s blueprint perfectly, and a European tie under the lights looks tailor-made for his return.

Araujo, meanwhile, could be handed a different brief.

Araujo to the middle, questions at the back

With Jeremy Jacquet still short of full fitness, the French defender has been unable to complete Liverpool’s opening league games and was again struggling to get through the weekend. That opens the door for Araujo to slide into the centre of defence alongside Virgil van Dijk.

It would be a formidable pairing on paper: Van Dijk’s authority and reading of the game, Araujo’s aggression and recovery pace. Against an Atletico side that thrives on punishing mistakes and set-piece chaos, Iraola may not want to take any risks with a half-fit Jacquet.

Midfield shake-up on the cards

The engine room is unlikely to escape the changes either.

Alexis Mac Allister could make way, with Ryan Gravenberch in line to step back into the starting XI and renew his partnership with Dominik Szoboszlai. That pairing offers legs, height and a directness that suits Iraola’s desire to win the ball and break lines quickly.

Trey Nyoni is another name firmly in the frame. The youngster has impressed off the bench this season, injecting energy and composure late in games, and he is now pushing for a full start. A Champions League opener is a big stage, but Iraola has already shown he is not afraid to trust youth if they fit his system.

One thing is certain: Wataru Endo will not feature. The experienced midfielder has been left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad list, removing one option for rotation in the holding role and sharpening the focus on those who remain.

Isak leads the line, decisions around him

Up front, Alexander Isak will carry the attack. Rested just after the hour at Ipswich, he still had time to deliver his first brace in Liverpool colours. Clinical, confident, and now fresh for Europe, the Swede is the fixed point around which everything else will revolve.

The question lies in who supports him.

Cody Gakpo has started the season in sparkling form, with one goal and three assists, and a promising understanding with Isak already emerging. Their burgeoning partnership offers fluid movement and interchange, dragging defenders into uncomfortable areas.

But Iraola has options. Bradley Barcola brings direct running and unpredictability, while Rio Ngumoha offers youthful fearlessness and sharp one-v-one threat. Either could step in if the manager decides Gakpo needs protecting from an early-season overload.

Florian Wirtz is set to remain the man between the lines, operating in the pocket as the creative hub. Iraola wants him to become the reference point of this new-look Liverpool, the player who knits the chaos together and finds the final pass once the press has done its damage.

Victor Munoz, by contrast, may be given a breather, another potential victim of the manager’s determination to keep his side fresh for the long haul.

Rotation, then, is not a luxury for Iraola. It’s a necessity. Anfield will expect a statement against Atletico. The real intrigue is whether this evolving, reshuffled Liverpool can deliver one without losing the intensity that now defines them.
