Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is turning into the transfer saga they never wanted: expensive, public, and almost certainly doomed.
The 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger has been Liverpool’s marquee target for the right flank all summer, earmarked as the long-term heir to Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian’s abrupt departure at the end of his deal. They moved early, they moved hard, and they moved with money.
It still has not been enough.
Liverpool push late – but Diomande’s mind is elsewhere
Liverpool tabled an offer worth €100m (£85m) to Leipzig, a bid structured either as €90m plus €10m in add-ons or €80m plus €20m, depending on the source. The detail of the instalments is academic. Leipzig said no. The German club knew the market, knew the level of interest, and knew Diomande’s leverage.
Crucially, so did the player.
Once Diomande signalled that his preference was Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool’s carefully laid plan began to unravel. The club’s hierarchy, led by FSG, pivoted towards Bradley Barcola as a potential solution on the flanks, sensing that Diomande was slipping away.
But they did not walk away.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have returned with a late attempt to hijack the deal, joining Arsenal and Manchester City in making fresh approaches. Of that trio, Liverpool are the most aggressive and the most desperate: he is their top target, and they have already proven they are willing to go to nine figures to get him.
The problem? The player is unmoved. Bailey is clear: Diomande wants PSG.
Al-Khelaifi steps in – and the deal tilts to Paris
For a brief moment, there were whispers that PSG might cool their interest, that the French champions might balk at the numbers or rethink their priorities. That window has closed.
Bailey reports that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now taken personal control of the negotiations with Leipzig, a significant escalation that underlines just how badly the European champions want Diomande. When the president steps in, it usually means two things: the club are serious, and the deal is close.
Al-Khelaifi’s strong relationship with the Red Bull hierarchy has accelerated talks. Inside Leipzig, there is an acceptance that Diomande is on his way out and that Paris is his destination. Sources close to the discussions believe an agreement is “drawing near”.
PSG are prepared to go beyond Liverpool’s ceiling, with a package in the region of €110m (£93.5m) understood to be on the table to finalise the move. For Leipzig, that is the kind of offer that ends debate. For Liverpool, it is the point where the dream hardens into reality: they are being outbid, outflanked, and outmanoeuvred by a club the player clearly prefers.
Liverpool’s Plan B: Barcola back in focus
As Diomande edges towards the Parc des Princes, Liverpool are being forced back to the drawing board. The focus returns to Bradley Barcola, a player whose future is already under pressure from the very transfer that is pushing Liverpool away.
Barcola, a France international, has reached an impasse with PSG over improved contract terms. The club are open to a sale at the right price, particularly if Diomande arrives to crowd an already competitive attacking line. For Liverpool, that tension in Paris creates an opening.
Barcola is not Diomande. He is a different profile, a different type of wide forward, and a different long-term bet. But he may soon be the most realistic one.
Liverpool wanted the true prize. They wanted the statement signing, the €100m winger to stride into Salah’s old lane on the right and define a new era under Andoni Iraola. Instead, they are watching PSG close in, with Al-Khelaifi at the controls and Diomande’s eyes fixed firmly on Paris.
The question now is not whether Liverpool can change his mind. It is whether they can pivot quickly enough to ensure that, come the start of the season, the right flank is not the most expensive missed opportunity of their summer.
