Liverpool Intensify Pursuit of Diomande as PSG Hesitates on Barcola

Liverpool are not just in the race for Yan Diomande – they are trying to run away with it.

The Premier League club have identified the 19-year-old RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast winger as their ideal long-term successor to Mohamed Salah, and they are backing that judgement with serious money and a clear pathway into the team.

Diomande’s reputation has exploded over the past year. Still a teenager, he is already viewed as one of the game’s most devastating wide forwards in one-v-one situations. His World Cup bow for Ivory Coast against Ecuador underlined the hype: isolated against Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie in the first half, Diomande repeatedly went at him, tore past him, and left a Champions League-level defender scrambling for solutions.

That kind of fearlessness has caught Liverpool’s eye.

Liverpool go hard – and early

The ultra-reliable David Ornstein has already reported that Liverpool opened direct talks with RB Leipzig over a deal. The German club do not want to lose him and have set a sky-high price, but there is an acceptance that an offer around their €130m (£112m) valuation could force a rethink.

Liverpool know they are not alone. PSG are pushing hard too. But the French champions are not operating with the same freedom.

On the player’s side, reports earlier on Tuesday indicated that Diomande currently favours a move to Anfield, attracted by the prospect of playing under Andoni Iraola and stepping into a clearly defined role in Liverpool’s attack. That preference matters in a tug-of-war at this level, especially when one club is ready to build an attacking project around him.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that Liverpool have put “important money” on the table to try to bring Diomande to Merseyside. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano outlined why the Reds are now edging ahead.

Two big advantages over PSG

“The battle is on between Liverpool and PSG,” Romano said, before stressing that this is not just a case of who writes the biggest cheque.

From his information, Liverpool are prepared to offer Diomande a more lucrative contract than PSG. The financial package to the player is strong, and it comes with the kind of status and responsibility that usually accompanies a marquee signing at Anfield.

PSG, by contrast, are tangled in their own squad puzzle. They cannot simply drop Diomande into the team; they need to clear space, and that hinges on Bradley Barcola.

Romano explained that PSG are still assessing “the right solution” for Barcola. They are waiting to see whether a suitable bid arrives, weighing up whether to cash in or keep faith with the 21-year-old. If a big offer lands and Barcola is sold, the path to Diomande becomes far smoother for the French club.

If it doesn’t, PSG’s hands are tied. They are not actively trying to push Barcola out of the door and are “not desperate” to sell. That reluctance gives Liverpool a clear opening.

Right now, Liverpool are pushing hard behind the scenes, fully aware of PSG’s interest but operating from a position of strength. PSG remain very keen on Diomande, yet, according to Romano, their proposal to the player currently falls short of Liverpool’s in financial terms.

The equation is simple. If a major bid for Barcola arrives, PSG can step up and truly test Liverpool’s resolve. If it doesn’t, Liverpool’s aggressive move for one of the most exciting young wingers in world football starts to look less like a battle and more like an opportunity they cannot afford to waste.
