Liverpool Pursue Ronald Araujo to Address Defensive Concerns
Liverpool have turned to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo in a bid to plug the growing gaps in Andoni Iraola’s back line, making a move for a season-long loan for the Uruguay international.
It is a move born of necessity as much as ambition.
Iraola’s options stripped back
Iraola’s first pre-season in charge has already delivered one major headache. Joe Gomez limped out of a friendly and scans later confirmed he will miss around a month, ruling him out of the start of the Premier League campaign. Giovanni Leoni is still feeling his way back from a serious ACL injury. Conor Bradley, a key piece in Liverpool’s long-term planning at right-back, remains some distance from a return.
The numbers have been shrinking in a department that was already under scrutiny.
Ibrahima Konaté’s departure to Real Madrid on a free at the end of his contract stripped away a first-choice centre-back. Jeremy Jacquet has arrived this summer and is highly regarded inside the club, but the 20-year-old is being carefully managed after his own injury issues and has yet to pull on a Liverpool shirt in a competitive setting.
For a coach who prizes structure and aggression without the ball, Iraola is heading into August with a defensive unit that looks alarmingly thin.
Araujo: experience and versatility
That context explains the move for Araujo, first reported by Fabrizio Romano. At 27, the defender brings the sort of experience and presence Liverpool’s back line is crying out for. He featured 24 times in La Liga for Barcelona last season and is an established Uruguay international.
Crucially, he covers two problem areas at once. Araujo is a natural centre-back but comfortable at right-back, offering Iraola flexibility as he juggles injuries and a reshaped squad. One signing, two holes patched.
He is not a long-term project or a speculative punt. He is ready-made, battle-tested, and used to the demands of a club where pressure is constant and mistakes are magnified. That profile matters in a dressing room adjusting to a new manager and a new defensive hierarchy.
Manager’s warning becomes action
Iraola has not hidden his concern. Asked earlier in the summer about the possibility of signing a right-back, he pointed directly to Bradley’s fitness as the hinge on which Liverpool’s plans would swing.
“I think it depends on Conor Bradley's situation,” he said. “If you have a fully fit, healthy Conor Bradley, we are very happy, ready to go and we would not be asking ourselves these questions.”
The problem is Bradley is not fully fit. Not close enough, in Iraola’s eyes, to carry the load from day one.
“So, with the center-back, with the right-back situation, in terms of defensive depth, we are, I think, very thin right now so I think it’s a solution that we are trying to find, yes.”
The move for Araujo is that solution made real: a short-term fix with top-level pedigree while Liverpool wait for Bradley to return and Jacquet to be eased in.
Anfield debut for Iraola, and a glimpse of what’s next
While the transfer work rumbles on, Iraola steps into the Anfield dugout for the first time this weekend as Liverpool face AS Monaco. It is only a pre-season fixture on paper, but for the Spaniard it is a first live test in front of the home crowd, a first look at how his ideas sit on the famous pitch.
Whether Araujo is in red by then or not, the message is clear. Liverpool have heard their manager’s warning about defensive depth and acted.
The question now is simple: will this be the stabilising move that underpins Iraola’s first season, or just the opening act in a bigger rebuild at the back?
