Liverpool's Winger Hunt Intensifies Amid Rebuffed Bids
The Premier League has kicked back into gear, but the market is still dictating the tempo. With just over a week left in the window, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are all pushing through heavyweight deals that could reshape their seasons before a ball has truly settled.
Liverpool short of wingers – and running into brick walls
Andoni Iraola has been blunt: Liverpool need wide players. Mohamed Salah’s long-term successor remains the central question at Anfield, and the early answers are proving expensive and elusive.
Brighton have already turned away two sizeable offers for Yankuba Minteh. Liverpool’s latest bid – £60m after an initial £50m – has been rejected as the Seagulls dig in over a player they clearly see as central to their plans and their balance sheet. The stance underlines just how inflated the winger market has become.
Liverpool’s ambition doesn’t stop there. The club want two wide forwards, with Minteh one option and Bradley Barcola another. But Paris Saint-Germain’s valuation of the France international borders on the prohibitive: £145m. That figure has not deterred Liverpool’s interest, but it does highlight the scale of the challenge Iraola faces as he tries to reshape his attack.
The pressure has already forced Liverpool to look elsewhere. The Times report that the club have made an enquiry to Real Madrid over Brazil forward Endrick. The 20-year-old spent last season at Lyon and featured as a squad player for Brazil at the World Cup. His role under new Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is uncertain, which has given Liverpool encouragement to at least test the waters.
All of this comes against the backdrop of Curtis Jones’s departure. The midfielder has joined Inter Milan in a €30m deal, with Liverpool potentially earning a further €5m in achievable add-ons and retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Jones, in the final year of his Anfield contract, made it clear to Iraola that he wanted to leave, forcing the club’s hand after an earlier €25m bid from Inter had been rejected.
The outgoings are clear. The incoming wingers are not. For now, Liverpool’s search continues, and the prices keep rising.
Arsenal land Konsa and pivot to Yildiz
Across north London, Arsenal’s window has moved from consolidation to ambition.
The Gunners have confirmed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a £51m deal, their fifth arrival of the summer. The defender, who could debut against his former club as early as next week, spoke openly about the pull of Mikel Arteta’s project.
“I know he loves defenders who can really defend and defenders who are calm on the ball. His style suits me so I can't wait to get going,” Konsa said. “It's a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world… I'm here to win. I'll do everything in my power to continue bringing success to this club.”
With the back line reinforced, Arsenal have turned back to a long-standing priority: a left-sided attacker. Vinicius Jr was the dream signing, the player Arteta had earmarked as the ideal fit. The Brazilian’s decision to stay at Real Madrid forced a rethink.
Now Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz has moved high on the list. Arsenal are exploring whether a deal for the 21-year-old Turkey international is realistic in this window as they prepare for another dual assault on the Premier League and Champions League.
There is also a longer game in play. Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi would likely have been the move this summer had it not been for his injury, and he remains a live option for January. Arsenal are clearly determined to upgrade that left flank, whether immediately or over the next two windows.
The rumour mill has even thrown up an audacious name: Victor Osimhen. Reports from Footmercato suggest Arsenal could move for the Galatasaray striker if he drops his wage demands. On the face of it, the fit looks complicated with Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus already in the building, but Osimhen’s long-running links to the Premier League refuse to fade.
Manchester United close in on Baleba
At Old Trafford, Manchester United have moved decisively.
On the morning they open their Premier League campaign against Hull, United have a £70m deal in place for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, finally closing in on a target they first pursued last summer. The 20-year-old is set to undergo a medical this weekend, with Sky Sports reporting a five-year contract on the table and a sell-on clause included for Brighton.
For Michael Carrick, it is a significant boost. United have been crying out for fresh energy and presence in midfield, and Baleba’s arrival would address a glaring need before the season settles into its relentless rhythm.
Spurs, Chelsea and the rest of the moving pieces
Tottenham are not standing still either. They have agreed a deal to sign winger Savinho from Manchester City for an initial £75m, a major outlay that underlines Ange Postecoglou’s desire to maintain attacking depth and unpredictability. Omar Marmoush is tipped to follow the Brazilian, which would give Spurs a very different look in the final third.
City, for their part, have already started plotting replacements. They have identified Brazilian winger Allan as a possible option as they reshape their own attacking options after a summer that has already seen significant movement across Europe.
Chelsea’s situation remains volatile. Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a turbulent summer that ended in a World Cup final red card and defeat. The midfielder has previously indicated he would be open to leaving, and new Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca is known to be an admirer from their time together.
Chelsea, though, set a clear deadline: any bids for Fernandez had to arrive by 5pm on Friday 14 August. That time has passed, and the club now expect him to stay. Xabi Alonso has insisted the Argentine is “training really well” ahead of the new season. Even so, City could yet probe Chelsea’s resolve before the window shuts, especially if they come close to the £120m valuation.
At Aston Villa, attention is turning to Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. The Midlands club are preparing a bid close to £65m for the Senegal international, according to reports, after his lively World Cup contrasted with a disappointing loan spell at Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid appear to have stepped away at that price, despite slapping a £150m valuation on Julian Alvarez, who is drawing interest from Barcelona and Arsenal.
Big names, big prices, and one frantic week left
Across Europe, major moves have already reshaped the landscape. Barcelona’s capture of Rodri, the headline transfers of Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes – they’ve all shifted expectations for the coming season.
But the window still has life in it. Liverpool are hunting wingers with urgency, Arsenal are trying to solve their left flank while bedding in Konsa, and Manchester United are about to drop £70m on Baleba.
The clock is ticking. Who blinks first in this final stretch: the clubs holding the talent, or the giants desperate enough to pay whatever it takes?
