Manchester United's New Era: Tielemans and Santos Set for Debuts

Manchester United’s new era under Michael Carrick begins on Humberside, and two fresh faces are set to walk straight into the Premier League spotlight.

Tielemans and Santos primed for debuts

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both in line for competitive debuts when Manchester United open their league campaign against Hull at the MKM Stadium today.

Santos, a £50million summer arrival from Chelsea, has already felt like part of the furniture. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies and rarely looked off the pace, a run that strongly points to him starting at the heart of Carrick’s midfield this afternoon.

Tielemans took a different route to this moment. After Belgium’s World Cup run to the quarter-finals, he returned late from an extended break and needed time to catch up. Ninety hard minutes against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Poland have sharpened him up, and he now looks ready to anchor United’s midfield in competitive action.

Carrick, preparing for his first full season as permanent head coach, could stick with the same trio that began the 4-2 defeat to Milan: Tielemans and Santos behind captain Bruno Fernandes, who will again be given licence to roam in his favoured No 10 role.

Defensive dilemmas for Carrick

The picture is less settled at the back.

Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness has opened the door for youngster Ayden Heaven, who is pushing to start alongside Harry Maguire in central defence. Leny Yoro is also in the frame, but Heaven’s momentum and Martinez’s fitness concerns could tilt the decision his way against one of Maguire’s former clubs.

Senne Lammens is expected to keep goal, with Luke Shaw locked in at left-back. On the opposite flank, though, Carrick faces a straight call between Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui for the right-back slot, a choice that will shape how aggressively United attack down that side.

Attack reshaped by injuries

Further forward, the puzzle becomes more intricate.

Patrick Dorgu has been one of the more intriguing stories in Carrick’s squad. Either side of a cruel injury suffered in January against Arsenal, he has been reinvented as a left winger, adding pace and direct running to United’s flank. That evolution creates a headache: Matheus Cunha does his best work from that same left channel.

The knock-on effect runs through the rest of the front line. With Benjamin Sesko not yet ready to start after a three-month injury lay-off, Carrick is likely to ask Cunha to operate as a central striker again. That shift would free Bryan Mbeumo to move back out to the right, restoring some balance to the attack.

New signings, bold calls in defence, and a reconfigured forward line: Carrick’s first full season starts with a statement team sheet. How much risk is he willing to take on day one?
