Logan Dobbs' Remarkable Rise at Gillingham

Gareth Ainsworth says even he didn’t see this coming from Logan Dobbs.

The 19-year-old defender has forced his way into Gillingham’s side and refused to let go of his place, starting every game so far this season. On Saturday, he added a new chapter: his first senior goal, a towering header that set the Gills on their way to a 2-0 win over Tranmere.

In the dugout, his manager could only admire the rise.

“Logan Dobbs has been a surprise package for me this year,” Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent, openly admitting the youngster has exceeded expectations.

The opportunity arrived in brutal fashion. Liam Gordon’s injury in the opening game and Sam Gale’s move to Barnsley suddenly ripped holes in Gillingham’s defensive plans. A door many barely noticed was there swung open.

Dobbs walked straight through it.

“All of a sudden the door opened and Logan’s been sensational,” Ainsworth said. “And I think he will understand when I say I didn’t know he was capable of – he’s done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here.”

Consistency is the word that keeps coming back around Dobbs. Not just a one-off performance, not a brief burst of form, but a steady presence in a side trying to find its rhythm in League Two.

On Saturday, the reliability came with a moment of pure emotion. Dobbs climbed, met the cross, and buried his header. The Rainham End responded instantly.

“Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own,” Ainsworth said. “So when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that’s what dreams are made of.”

From squad option to terrace favourite in a matter of weeks. It’s the kind of story that knits a young player to a club.

Gillingham sit 11th in League Two, still searching for the consistency that might turn a solid start into something more serious. Next up is a real test of those ambitions: second-placed Bristol Rovers visit on Saturday.

Dobbs will expect to start again. At this rate, how could he not?
