Lucas Herrington Shines in Premier League Debut for Hull City

Lucas Herrington’s Premier League debut could hardly have been scripted better.

Thrown on for the final half-hour against Manchester United, the teenage Socceroo helped Hull City close out a stunning 2-0 win over one of English football’s heavyweights, as the newly promoted side marked their return to the top flight with a statement.

Hull stun United, teenager steps into the spotlight

At 18 years and 351 days, Herrington became the first Australian teenager to play in the Premier League since Harry Kewell and only the third-youngest Australian ever to feature in the competition. He played like he belonged.

The Queensland-born defender, Hull’s record $A33 million signing and the only Australian currently in the Premier League, was immaculate at the heart of the defence after replacing the injured Nobel Mendy in the 64th minute as part of a triple substitution. Nine touches. No frills. No panic. Just clean, composed defending while United huffed and puffed in vain.

By then, the damage was already done.

Hull, widely tipped as relegation certainties before a ball was kicked, had ripped up that script with two first-half set-piece goals and a performance full of discipline and belief. United, under Michael Carrick, looked slow and predictable, their build-up play ponderous and their final ball badly lacking.

Set-piece precision, United punished

The Tigers struck first from a corner in the 17th minute. United failed to clear their lines and centre-back Semi Ajayi pounced, opening the scoring and jolting the visitors.

United never really recovered their rhythm. Hull, sharper and more aggressive, sensed vulnerability and kept asking questions from dead-ball situations.

The pressure told again in the 38th minute. Regan Slater whipped in a dangerous free-kick and Mendy, the central defender signed on the same day as Herrington earlier in the month and preferred to start ahead of the Australian, met it with a precise header to double the lead. Hull were 2-0 up and fully worth it.

Old doubts about United’s resilience resurfaced. Hull, by contrast, looked nothing like a side supposedly destined for a relegation scrap.

Herrington’s moment

Mendy’s injury on 64 minutes opened the door. On came Herrington, the former Colorado Rapids defender, for his Premier League bow with a two-goal cushion to protect and United finally showing some urgency.

If there were nerves, they never showed. Herrington slotted straight into the back line, read the game well and stayed calm as United launched a series of largely lumbering attacks. Crosses were dealt with, runners tracked, angles cut off. For a teenager in his first taste of this level, he looked strikingly at ease.

Hull held firm to claim their first league victory over United in 52 years, a landmark win that immediately shifts the mood around their season and gives their young Australian a debut to remember.

More chances on the horizon

Bosnian manager Sergej Jakirovic later confirmed that Ajayi, Mendy and captain Lewis Coyle will all need to be assessed for injuries over the next 24 hours. If any of them are sidelined, Herrington’s role could grow quickly.

He is already in line to feature in Wednesday morning’s AEST League Cup tie away to Championship side Stoke, and with a huge league clash to come against fellow promoted club Coventry — who opened with a 3-0 defeat at champions Arsenal — the teenager may find himself back in the thick of it sooner rather than later.

One game in, Hull have torn up the narrative. Now the question is whether their unflappable young Australian can help them write an entirely new one.
