Luka Vuskovic's Impressive Brighton Debut
Luka Vuskovic did not need long to understand what Brighton have bought.
Under the Amex lights, in a pre-season friendly against Roma that felt far more serious than the calendar suggested, the club’s record signing slipped into the back line, played 45 composed minutes and walked off with the thing he values most.
A clean sheet.
“It was very nice,” he said of his home debut, speaking to BBC Radio Sussex. Simple words, but they matched the performance: unfussy, assured, effective.
A calm first look at Brighton’s future
Vuskovic started at centre-back and was withdrawn at half-time for club captain Lewis Dunk, a neat baton pass between Brighton’s present and what they hope is a sizeable part of their future.
For the teenager, the night was about more than just minutes.
“A clean sheet is the most important thing for me as a defender, but I think we played very good as a team,” he said. “The last two or three weeks that I’ve been here have been really nice and I am enjoying my time here.
“All the guys accepted me really well, so did the coaching staff and the other people at the club.
“I think we are a really good group of young people and we can only grow as players and humans. I think this will be a really good season for us.”
There was no bravado, no attempt to talk himself up. Just a young defender quietly staking out his standards.
Hurzeler sees a quick study
On the touchline, head coach Fabian Hurzeler liked what he saw – and what he has learned so far about the club’s most expensive investment.
“He’s very mature for his age so he adapts quickly and understands quickly,” Hurzeler said. “If a player can understand quickly then it shows they have real quality.
“He will be an important player for us. This is just the first step as there are things that he needs to improve, but he has the right mindset and attitude.”
Brighton have built their Premier League rise on identifying players who think as sharply as they play. Hurzeler’s emphasis on how fast Vuskovic processes information fits that blueprint perfectly.
The coach also pointed to a less obvious weapon.
“He is a big threat as he scored a lot of goals at his previous club, so that will help us with set pieces which have been very important for us in the Premier League.”
A centre-back who relishes defending and carries a genuine goal threat at dead balls is exactly the kind of dual-purpose asset Brighton have turned into a habit.
This, as Hurzeler stressed, is only the first step. But on a warm night at the Amex, with Roma dispatched and the defence unbreached, Brighton’s record signing offered a clear early hint: he has no intention of needing long to grow into this stage.
