Lukaku Nears Exit from Napoli as Fenerbahce Deal Finalizes

Romelu Lukaku’s Napoli chapter is almost over. Not with fireworks, but with a deal that suits everyone just enough to get it done.

Napoli and Fenerbahce are in the final stretch of negotiations for the Belgian striker, with the agreement expected to be wrapped up within hours. Napoli initially pushed back a €6 million offer, but Fenerbahce’s improved proposal, sweetened by bonuses, finally unlocked the stalemate, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The player has already done his part. Lukaku has accepted the move, completed his medicals, and now waits while the two clubs trade documents. His contract terms are clear: €10 million per season on a one-year deal, with an option attached, as reported by Mediaset.

Forty percent of the fee Fenerbahce pay will go straight to Chelsea, but the Italian club will avoid booking a net loss on the deal. More crucially, they free up a major chunk of their wage bill by moving on one of the highest earners in the squad.

This departure has been coming for a long time. In the spring, Lukaku’s exit looked inevitable after he chose not to return from international duty, preferring to continue his rehab at home ahead of the World Cup. The decision did not sit well in Naples and was widely seen as a breaking point.

Then came the twist. A coaching change for the Azzurri prompted Lukaku to reconsider, and he briefly seemed open to staying. Massimiliano Allegri, for his part, was prepared to keep him, but only in a reduced role. For a player on such a heavy salary, that equation simply did not add up. It is easy to forget just how decisive he once was for them. Two seasons ago, Lukaku was a central figure in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph, delivering 14 goals and 10 assists and bullying defences across Italy. That version of the Belgian felt indispensable.

The most recent campaign told a different story. A serious thigh injury sidelined him for most of the season, stripping him of rhythm and influence. At the same time, Napoli’s long-term commitment to Rasmus Hojlund shifted the internal hierarchy and strained the relationship further. The future was being built elsewhere.
