Manchester City Prepare for Community Shield Without Rodri

Manchester City are bracing for a Community Shield without Rodri – and possibly a future without him altogether.

The midfielder, the metronome of Pep Guardiola’s great side and the man Enzo Maresca would have planned to build around, has been hit by a double setback: minor back surgery and serious interest from Real Madrid.

Community Shield hopes all but gone

Any faint hope of Rodri featuring against Arsenal next month was already fragile. He went all the way to the final day of the World Cup, meaning his post-tournament break runs right into the week of the Community Shield. Fitness, sharpness, preparation – all of it would have been on a tightrope.

Now it looks impossible.

City have confirmed the 28-year-old has undergone successful minor back surgery. The club expect only a short rehabilitation period, not a long-term absence, but even a brief spell out tips the balance. A player who has carried such a heavy workload for club and country was unlikely to be rushed back into a curtain-raiser.

For Maresca, it is a jolt. His blueprint for a first competitive test against Arsenal will almost certainly have to be drawn without the one midfielder City have never truly replaced when absent.

Real Madrid move gathers pace

The injury is only half the story.

Real Madrid have opened talks with Manchester City over Rodri, with club president Florentino Pérez giving the move his approval, according to Fabrizio Romano. Contact has been made, the line is open, and this is no tentative enquiry.

Romano reports that playing for Real Madrid has long been Rodri’s dream and that he has been pushing for the move for some time. Madrid, for their part, have indicated a willingness to go beyond €50m (£42.8m) to land him. City, unsurprisingly, are expected to demand more for a player who has been central to their era of dominance.

City anticipate other clubs entering the race. Rodri, though, has made his preference clear: he wants Madrid. That stance will shape the market and the negotiations now set to follow.

Arsenal rivalry on pause, not decided

From Arsenal’s perspective, the timing is curious. They face City in the Community Shield but then do not meet them in the Premier League until 28 November. There is also the possibility of a League Cup fourth-round tie in October, but the league showdown – the one that really measures title credentials – lies deep into the autumn.

By then, this saga will be over one way or another. Either City will have fought off Madrid and reshaped their midfield around a fully fit Rodri under Maresca, or they will be adjusting to life without the man who has been their on-pitch reference point for years.

For now, Arsenal are likely to avoid him at Wembley. The more pressing question is whether they will ever face him in a City shirt again.
