Manchester City Considers Enzo Fernandez Amid Rodri Exit
Manchester City’s midfield, the bedrock of their recent dominance, is bracing for a potential seismic shift – and Enzo Fernandez has moved sharply into focus.
Rodri, the metronome of four title-winning seasons, is edging closer to what has been described as an emotional departure this summer. Inside the club, the expectation is clear: if he goes, he must be replaced properly. Not patched over. Replaced.
That is the backdrop to growing noise around Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, a player with a £120 million price tag and a manager in Manchester with a direct line to him.
Maresca’s rebuild gathers pace
Enzo Maresca has not tiptoed into the job. City have already thrown £116 million at Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, with Lille’s 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi lined up as the next major investment at around £86 million.
Bouaddi is viewed as part of the future. Rodri’s replacement would be about the present.
Former City financial adviser Stefan Borson, speaking to Football Insider, underlined that point, insisting City intend to be “pretty busy” before the window shuts and that Bouaddi’s arrival is expected regardless of what happens with Rodri.
The message is unmistakable: this is a full-scale refresh, not a light touch.
Enzo in the frame
That brings the focus squarely onto Fernandez. Chelsea’s No.8 is not short of admirers. Real Madrid have been linked, and Chelsea are understood to want around £120 million to even consider letting him go.
Yet City’s interest is not drifting away. If anything, Rodri’s situation has dragged it closer to the surface.
Maresca’s past connection with Fernandez keeps the conversation alive around the Etihad. Borson openly raised the prospect of the 25-year-old World Cup winner being lined up as Rodri’s successor, calling any move for him “an enormous transaction” and framing the key question bluntly: is he the replacement?
Chelsea, for their part, are expected to be active sellers and buyers right up to the deadline. Fernandez sits right in the middle of that uncertainty – a marquee asset whose future still carries, in Borson’s words, a “question mark”.
City’s deadline: the Community Shield
Inside City, there is a clear desire to avoid a late-summer saga with their most important midfielder. Borson suggested the club will want Rodri’s situation resolved before the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August.
That date now feels like a line in the sand.
City do not want to be dragged into a drawn-out stand-off. Either a serious offer arrives for Rodri before that curtain-raiser, or the stance hardens: he stays for the season. Only once that domino falls will City be ready to move decisively for a replacement.
If Rodri goes, the path towards Fernandez becomes far more direct.
Chelsea’s dilemma
Chelsea face their own calculation. Fernandez arrived as a centrepiece signing after the World Cup and has produced strong attacking numbers: 16 goals and 10 assists in 61 games last season. That kind of output from midfield is not easily replaced.
Yet if they are “looking to get rid”, as some around the situation have suggested, the reasons will be financial, tactical, or both. Offloading such a high-value player would reshape their balance sheet and their squad in one hit.
For City, those same numbers make him a tantalising fit. A midfielder with proven end product, comfortable in possession, and with the engine to operate in Maresca’s structured, possession-heavy system.
The question now is not whether Fernandez would improve City. He would. It is whether City are prepared to “play that game”, as Borson put it, on two fronts at once: holding their nerve with Rodri while staring down Chelsea’s valuation of their most expensive midfielder.
The clock is ticking towards the Community Shield. By the time City walk out to face Arsenal at Wembley, we may know whether their midfield future still revolves around Rodri – or whether Enzo Fernandez is about to be dropped into the heart of the champions’ next era.
