Manchester City Target Bouaddi as Midfield Shift Looms

Manchester City are moving with intent. Ayyoub Bouaddi, Lille’s prodigy and one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe, is edging closer to a move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

City, according to reports from Jeremy Cross, are confident they can get the deal over the line before the window shuts. The numbers are heavyweight: an £85m fee expected to be agreed with Lille and a five-year contract waiting for the Morocco international.

It would be a statement signing. City are reshaping their midfield and see Bouaddi as a pillar for the next decade, not a luxury.

Lille, though, are not rolling over.

Lille dig in as Ancelotti makes his case

Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti knows exactly what he has on his hands – and what he stands to lose.

“Bouaddi is a very good player,” he said after their 1-1 draw with Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where the 18-year-old played the second half. Officially, Bouaddi remains very much in his plans.

“He is available [in terms of his fitness] and he played 45 minutes. But that is only because I have to manage his minutes. Next week we start the season and I consider him as an available player for me.”

The reality is more complicated. Negotiations are active, interest is widespread, and Lille are listening.

“Of course, there are negotiations. There is interest from so many clubs. He is a really, really good player and I hope that he is going to stay with us.”

Ancelotti did not hold back when asked what separates Bouaddi from the rest.

“He has a huge personality. He is incredibly intelligent on and off the pitch, he is really mature. He is 18 years old but he looks like he is 32 when he is on the pitch.

“Technically he is really complete. He is also physical, really strong in duels. He’s going to be one of the best midfielders in Europe for the next ten years.”

That is the level City are chasing. And they are not alone.

Maresca pushes for speed at City

Enzo Maresca, preparing for his first Premier League campaign in charge of City, did not hide his desire to get any new arrival – Bouaddi included – through the door quickly.

"He's still a Lille player," Maresca said, choosing his words carefully. The message underneath was clear.

"But any new signing, any new player, for sure as soon as they arrive it's better.

"Because we're going to start the Premier League in one week. If they start to work with us as soon as possible, it's better if they can also understand the way we need to play."

Time, not just money, is now part of the negotiation.

United rebuild on a tighter budget

Across Manchester, the market looks very different.

Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, are hunting a central midfielder and a left-back but are expected to turn to cheaper, lower-profile options for their next two additions.

The club have already committed serious money to the middle of the pitch. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea for £50m, followed by Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after United triggered his £35m release clause. Two signings, £85m, and a rebuilt core in midfield.

Casemiro’s departure has forced the issue. The Brazil international left at the end of his contract and has joined Inter Miami, the MLS club owned by David Beckham, on a free transfer. His exit leaves at least one more midfield signing on the table.

Carrick likes what he has – but he is not pretending the job is done.

“I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got really some top, top, top players,” he said. “We’re delighted with that. We always want to improve. We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that. That never stops.”

United’s recruitment drive, then, will continue, even if the next names lack the shine of City’s primary target.

Fernandes off limits despite Galatasaray push

One name is definitely not leaving Old Trafford.

Galatasaray are reportedly putting together an ambitious package for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as they try to keep pace with the eye-catching moves of rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig.

The Independent report that the Istanbul club are exploring a lucrative deal for the 31-year-old, but United’s stance is uncompromising. Fernandes is untouchable.

Fresh from a record-breaking Premier League assist campaign that dragged United back into the Champions League, the Portuguese playmaker remains at the heart of their project. Even with just a year left on his contract, United hold a one-year extension option and have no interest in cashing in on the eve of a new season.

Galatasaray may push. United will not budge.

Juventus move for Vicario after Martinez collapse

On the continent, Juventus have turned their attention to north London.

The Serie A giants have approached Tottenham Hotspur over a move for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian watched from the stands during Spurs’ friendly against Hoffenheim at the weekend as he waits for clarity on his future.

At 29, Vicario has long been open to a return to Italy, and that opportunity is now firmly on the table. Fabrizio Romano reports that Juventus are in direct talks with Spurs over a loan deal that would include a clause to make the transfer permanent next summer.

That pivot comes after Juve abandoned a move for Emi Martinez. The deal with Aston Villa collapsed over the gap in valuation between the clubs, just as Villa themselves closed in on Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

The dominoes are moving. Vicario looks set to be the beneficiary.

Arteta and the late-window scramble

The tension of the final weeks of the window is not confined to Manchester or Turin.

At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta is also pushing for reinforcements. A thin bench in defence laid bare the gaps he wants filled.

"Well, we know that there are certain areas that, through injuries, we are weaker and we need to strengthen," he said when asked why he had only one defender among his substitutes.

"We are trying to do that, we've been trying to do that for weeks, so only the right opportunity and the club is able to do it. We will do it."

Everyone, it seems, is chasing something before the deadline. Some clubs are hunting bargains, others are preparing to smash records.

And over it all hangs the same question: does Ayyoub Bouaddi walk out at the Etihad in sky blue, or does Lille’s teenage general delay his coronation as Europe’s next great midfielder for one more season?
