Manchester City Faces Double Blow Ahead of UEFA Champions League

Double blow before Porto

An open training session earlier today offered the first clue. As the squad went through their final preparations, two notable figures were missing from the group: Doku and O’Reilly were nowhere to be seen.

The reasons are clear and worrying for Maresca.

Doku is still out with the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the FA Community Shield three weeks ago. That setback has lingered, keeping one of City’s most explosive wide options on the sidelines just as European competition returns.

O’Reilly’s issue is more recent. The youngster suffered a back injury during the warm-up before City’s 1-0 win over Coventry City on Saturday, cutting short his involvement before the game had even started. There has been no rapid turnaround.

The pressure finally told when the travelling squad for Porto was announced. Any lingering hope of a late inclusion vanished: neither Doku nor O’Reilly made the list.

So City head to the Dragão lighter in numbers and without a key dribbler and a promising midfield option. The stage remains the same, the stakes just as high. The question now is whether Maresca’s reshuffled group can stamp their authority on Europe’s biggest stage from the very first whistle.
