Manchester United Targets Brazil Striker Igor Thiago for Attack Plans
Manchester United have made an exploratory move for Brentford striker Igor Thiago as they quietly map out their next step in attack.
The Brazil international, fresh from a prolific Premier League season, has been discussed at Old Trafford and has already received a call from United, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The contact was described as a routine “player call” to gauge his situation rather than the start of a full-blown transfer push, but it underlines how seriously United are tracking the 25-year-old.
A striker on the rise
Thiago is coming off a standout campaign. Twenty-two goals in the Premier League, 25 in all competitions, turned him from a solid performer into one of the division’s most reliable finishers. That form earned him a Brazil debut in 2026 and a place at the World Cup, where the step up to international level proved far less forgiving. He struggled to replicate his club dominance on the biggest stage, despite being given multiple chances.
United, though, are clearly looking at the broader picture. A forward who has already shown he can handle the rhythm and physicality of the Premier League is exactly the profile they have in mind if their attacking plans open up.
Jacobs, speaking to The United Stand, described Thiago as “Premier League ready” and confirmed he is firmly on the club’s radar. The interest is real. The deal, at this stage, is not.
United’s transfer priorities – and the Zirkzee factor
Inside Old Trafford, the summer blueprint is clear. The top priority is still the midfield rebuild. Two new midfielders are already through the door; a third is viewed as essential to complete the overhaul. Alongside that, a new left-back is high on the list, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as the primary target.
Only once those positions are addressed will United seriously turn the dial up on attacking reinforcements.
Out wide, a new left winger is being considered, but only if a solution is found for Marcus Rashford’s future. Up front, everything hinges on Joshua Zirkzee. If he stays, United may ride with their current centre-forward options. If he leaves, the club want an experienced or proven striker to step in.
That is where Thiago comes into focus. He sits in the same conversation as Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins, names already linked as possible options should United need to react in the market. Earlier in the window, the club even weighed up a surprise reunion with Danny Welbeck before he committed to Chelsea.
The pressure to get this call right is obvious. United cannot afford another misstep at the tip of their attack.
A difficult deal to pull off
For all the intrigue around Thiago, prising him away from Brentford this summer will be anything but simple. Jacobs was blunt on that point: “Getting him out this summer will be incredibly difficult.”
Brentford know exactly what they have. A 25-year-old, in his prime, proven in the league, and now a Brazil international. That is expensive territory. It is also the sort of profile clubs are reluctant to lose unless the numbers become impossible to refuse.
United’s approach so far reflects that reality. Internal discussions. A phone call to the player’s camp. No bid, no negotiations, no escalation. Not yet.
With midfield and left-back business still taking precedence, the Thiago situation sits in a holding pattern. United are watching, asking questions, keeping the line warm.
Everything else waits on Zirkzee. If the Dutchman stays, Thiago may remain just a name on a shortlist. If he goes, that quiet call to the Brazil striker could end up being the first step in a much louder move.
