Manchester United's Return to Champions League Action
Old Trafford has waited three years for this. On Thursday night, the Champions League anthem returns, the floodlights go up, and Manchester United walk out against rank outsiders Sabah FK with expectation heavy in the air.
Michael Carrick is the man who brought them back. The former United midfielder guided his old club to a third-placed finish in the Premier League last season, earned the job on a permanent basis, and now faces his first European night in the home dugout. The opponent might be modest. The stakes are not.
Carrick’s injury puzzle
Carrick’s selection board is not exactly chaos, but there are enough moving parts to keep him honest.
Mason Mount offered a timely boost this week, pictured back in full training and pushing to be involved after his latest setback. Matthijs de Ligt is edging towards the end of a long, frustrating recovery from a back problem, though this game may come just too soon for a full return to the starting XI.
Luke Shaw is the big concern. Carrick admitted the left-back is being carefully managed after the 2-2 draw at Everton, where Shaw still found the energy and quality to whip in the cross for Benjamin Sesko’s goal at the Hill Dickenson Stadium. That assist underlined Shaw’s importance. His fitness now shapes the whole back four.
Sesko himself is closing in on full sharpness after a shin issue cut short his previous campaign. Carrick has hinted the Slovenian is nearly there, which puts real pressure on the forward line. If Sesko starts, someone big sits.
There is no such debate over Amad Diallo. The winger is out until October with an ankle injury. New midfielder Carlos Baleba, signed from Brighton and Hove Albion, is in a similar position and will not feature.
Defensive decisions
Senne Lammens is set to keep his place in goal, the Belgian trusted again as United’s last line.
Right-back is a straight fight between Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot. One of them may not even play on their natural side. If Shaw is not deemed ready, Carrick could flip one of his right-backs over to the left, a solution he has toyed with before. The alternative is bolder: hand a European start to Harry Amass. The teenager stayed at Old Trafford despite late transfer interest and now lurks as a genuine option.
At centre-back, De Ligt’s lingering doubt keeps the door open. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez started together at Everton, a partnership built on Maguire’s solid pre-season alongside youngster Ayden Heaven. Heaven could be rotated back in if Carrick wants to manage minutes, while Leny Yoro adds another layer of choice in a suddenly crowded position.
Midfield balance without Baleba and Ugarte
In midfield, Mount’s return eases the loss of Baleba and Manuel Ugarte, both stuck in the treatment room. Carrick has recently anchored his 4-2-3-1 with Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo as the double pivot, a pairing that offers passing range and control.
That structure is unlikely to change dramatically for the opener, though Andrey Santos, the £48m signing from Chelsea, is waiting impatiently for a bigger role. Whether Carrick throws him straight into a Champions League start or keeps faith with the Tielemans–Mainoo axis will say plenty about the manager’s risk appetite on night one.
Attack packed with options
Higher up the pitch, Bruno Fernandes remains the heartbeat in the No10 role, charged with unlocking a Sabah side expected to sit deep and cling on.
Bryan Mbeumo is in line to start off the right, his direct running and work rate giving United width and bite. The real intrigue comes on the left and through the middle. If Sesko is declared ready to lead the line, Marcus Rashford could be handed a rest, a rare luxury for a player so often leaned on in big games. That scenario would likely push Matheus Cunha out to the left flank, where his ability to drift inside and link play could overload Sabah’s back line.
Carrick, though, has the option to keep Rashford in and use Cunha centrally. The opponent might be labelled “minnows”, but the manager knows complacency is a dangerous European habit.
