Manchester United Denies Barcelona's Sesko Inquiry Amid Striker Search

Barcelona’s hunt for a successor to Robert Lewandowski has taken them to Old Trafford – but Manchester United have made their stance on Benjamin Sesko brutally clear.

Reports in Spain placed the Slovenian on a Barcelona shortlist as the Catalan club scramble to identify a new No. 9 for next season. Lewandowski is set to leave after four years at the Nou Camp, and the search for his replacement has already turned into a high-profile trawl across Europe’s elite forwards.

Sesko’s name surfaced in Marca as one of the options under consideration, alongside Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy. There has also been talk in Spain that Atletico Madrid could move for Sesko if they finally cash in on Julian Alvarez, their primary attacking target.

That is where United step in and draw a line.

Club sources are giving those stories short shrift. There is no appetite at Old Trafford to cash in on a centre-forward they only signed last summer and who they now view as central to their long-term plans. For United, Sesko is not a bargaining chip in Barcelona’s rebuild. He is the rebuild.

The numbers explain why. Signed from RB Leipzig for £73million, Sesko took time to adjust but grew into the season. Once he found his rhythm, he became a reliable weapon. Twelve goals in 32 appearances, 11 of them in the Premier League, at a rate of one every 149 minutes. For a 23-year-old in his first year in English football, that return has been judged a major success inside the club.

United’s faith has only hardened since Rasmus Hojlund’s permanent move to Napoli for £38million. That deal effectively cleared the lane for Sesko. The Slovenian is now viewed as the long-term No. 9, the focal point around which Michael Carrick can shape his attack.

Carrick’s arrival in January proved a turning point. Seven of Sesko’s 12 goals came after the former midfielder replaced Ruben Amorim, underlining how quickly the pair clicked. The new manager trusted Sesko’s movement, his work rate, his ability to attack space. Sesko, in turn, responded to the detailed work being put in by Carrick and first-team coach Travis Binnion on the training ground.

The relationship has been built quietly. Extra sessions, individual drills, tweaks to his game. Stronger hold-up play. Sharper runs across the front post. Better timing when dropping off the line. United believe they are only scratching the surface.

Even so, his first campaign was not handed to him on a plate. Sesko featured in all but one of the 31 Premier League matches for which he was available, yet started only 17 of them. Under Carrick, he began just six of 17 league games. He had to make his case from the bench, and he did, which only strengthened the conviction that he is ready for a bigger role.

Barcelona’s situation could hardly be more different. Their ideal solution remains Julian Alvarez, currently at Atletico Madrid, but negotiations have stalled. As the clock ticks on their summer rebuild, the scouting net has widened and Sesko’s profile – age, physicality, finishing record – makes obvious sense on paper.

On the grass, though, he is United’s project, not Barcelona’s opportunity.

United are not just rejecting offers. They are planning around him. With Hojlund gone and no like-for-like replacement being lined up, the path is clear for Sesko to move from rotation option to undisputed first-choice striker next season. Internally, the expectation is that his minutes – and his responsibility – will rise significantly.

Barcelona can keep drawing up lists. Atletico can explore contingencies. Guirassy can stay in the frame. But as things stand, Sesko is going nowhere.

His next move is not across the continent. It is up a level, at Old Trafford.
