Manchester United Target Ederson and Mateus Fernandes for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United are preparing for a ruthless reset in midfield, with Casemiro on his way out and deals for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes moving into the decisive stages.

The club have opted not to renew Casemiro’s contract, allowing the Brazilian to leave on a free transfer this summer. He has been outstanding this season, a leader and a reference point in the middle of the pitch, but at 34 United have drawn a hard line. The message is clear: the next version of this team will be built on younger legs.

Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow him through the exit door. Signed for £50.5 million and billed as a long‑term anchor, he has not come close to justifying that fee. United are now ready to cash in and start again.

That double departure has forced a full-scale rethink at Old Trafford. The original plan centred on Elliot Anderson, but the Newcastle midfielder is now heading towards Manchester City, a significant blow given how heavily United had scouted him. With that avenue closing, the recruitment team have pivoted sharply towards Atalanta’s Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

Ederson deal at advanced stage

Ederson appears the closest to walking through the door. According to talkSPORT, United are “closing in” on an agreement with Atalanta for a package that could rise to around £43m.

The Brazilian has already given the move the green light and is ready to sign a five-year contract. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle. United want his intensity, his ability to break lines and his engine in both directions. Atalanta have been braced for his departure; United are now pushing to finalise the structure of the fee.

The plan is simple: secure Ederson, then go hard for Mateus Fernandes.

United lead race for Mateus Fernandes

CaughtOffside report that United now “lead the race” for Fernandes and have emerged as the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with the 21‑year‑old’s representatives.

The competition is serious. Arsenal view the Portuguese midfielder as a possible successor to Christian Norgaard in the deeper role they are looking to refresh. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint‑Germain and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring his situation, aware that West Ham’s relegation has changed the numbers.

United, though, have put in the most groundwork and are currently in pole position. One factor plays heavily in their favour: Fernandes is keen to line up alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford. The chance to share a midfield with the United captain, and to do it in the Champions League, is a powerful pull.

Early estimates had his price soaring towards £80m. That figure has now been revised. CaughtOffside claim West Ham’s drop into the Championship means he is available in the €50–60m bracket, roughly £43–52m. For a 21‑year‑old with his ceiling, United see that as a market opportunity they cannot ignore.

Two in – and maybe a third

The expectation inside the club is that Ederson will be wrapped up first, with the Fernandes pursuit moving into full throttle immediately after. Both deals are described as “edging closer”, and United’s hierarchy are prepared for a busy, expensive few weeks.

The rebuild might not stop there. According to the Daily Mail’s United correspondent Chris Wheeler, the club are also planning a £20m move for an additional midfield option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles among the targets under discussion.

If the finances stretch, United could enter next season with three new midfielders, Casemiro gone, Ugarte sold, and a completely different profile at the heart of the team.

For a club that has too often clung to yesterday’s solutions, this summer’s business will show whether Old Trafford is finally ready to trust tomorrow’s midfield.
