Manchester United's £43m Decision on Edmond Tapsoba
Manchester United face a £43million decision if they want to test Bayer Leverkusen’s resolve over Edmond Tapsoba – and they are not alone in the chase.
The Bundesliga champions have made it clear they do not want to lose their captain, but the door is not completely shut. Leverkusen are said to be willing to listen if what they consider a “suitable financial offer” lands on the table, with £43m the figure being quoted for the 27-year-old centre-back.
Leverkusen leader in demand
Tapsoba has become one of the pillars of Xabi Alonso’s side, a defender trusted to start attacks at high speed and patrol huge spaces behind an aggressive press. That profile has put him firmly on the radar of several Premier League clubs.
According to fussballdaten, Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham are all in regular contact with Tapsoba’s camp over what it would take to get a deal done. The report labels him “tailor-made” for a team that wants to build from the back at tempo.
His numbers underline his importance. Tapsoba scored five goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, adding a threat from set pieces to his defensive authority. Earlier this year he signed a new contract running until 2031, a deal that heavily strengthens Leverkusen’s bargaining position.
Even so, his openness to a move has stirred the market. Newcastle reportedly view him as a ready-made leader for the heart of their defence. Tottenham, still reshaping their back line, remain in the conversation as well.
United’s interest is not new. They were linked with Tapsoba in 2024 before choosing to strengthen at centre-back with Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt that summer.
United’s priorities lie elsewhere – for now
This window, United’s recruitment drive has been aimed at other areas. Michael Carrick has pushed for reinforcements at left-back and in central midfield, and the club has moved quickly in those zones.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already arrived at Old Trafford to bolster the engine room, yet there is still room – and appetite – for another midfielder before the deadline.
Out wide on the left, United have explored a move for Lewis Hall as they try to upgrade the flank. Newcastle, though, have made their stance clear: Hall is not for sale. A similar response has come from Club Brugge regarding Joaquin Seys, shutting down another potential avenue.
Carrick has not hidden his desire for more business before the window closes.
“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.
“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.
“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”
The question now is simple: with rivals circling and Leverkusen holding firm at £43m, will United decide that pushing again for Tapsoba is worth the price?
