Manchester United Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash
Manchester United’s squad is already under strain as they prepare for a tense Premier League meeting with Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, with nine players ruled out or major doubts across the two camps.
United are still reeling from a bruising opening-day defeat at Hull City, a 2-0 loss to a side widely tipped for relegation. The result has sharpened the focus on Michael Carrick’s team and piled early pressure on a group that cannot afford another slip.
They have moved aggressively in the market, landing Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion in a £70million deal. But the marquee signing will have to wait to make his mark. Carrick confirmed the midfielder is carrying an ankle issue and is not expected to feature for “maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks”, stressing it is “no major issue” but still a setback for a side desperate for a spark.
United stretched before Ipswich test
The absentees do not stop there. Amad Diallo will miss out again after picking up a minor injury in training that also kept him out of the defeat at Hull. Carrick was clear: “Amad won’t be involved, he’ll be out for a little bit longer.” Another attacking option gone.
Mason Mount will also remain on the sidelines for the visit of the Tractor Boys, though there is at least a hint of optimism around the midfielder. “Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive,” Carrick said, suggesting his full return is edging closer even if this game comes too soon.
At the back, United are still without Matthijs De Ligt. The Dutch defender has been a long-term absentee but is now back on the training pitch, working his way towards full fitness. “Matta’s obviously been out for a long period of time,” Carrick said. “But he’s training and it’s great to have him back. He won’t be involved, but he’s in good shape and moving in a good direction.” Encouraging, yes, but United will once again have to cope without his presence in the heart of defence.
Even the depth in goal has taken a hit. Veteran backup Tom Heaton remains unavailable after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG. Carrick has not put a date on his return, leaving United a little lighter behind their first-choice keeper than they would like.
All of that combines to leave Carrick juggling his options at a time when United need clarity and control. Old Trafford expects a response. The manager must find it with a patched-up squad.
Ipswich travel without key quartet
Ipswich arrive in Manchester in a very different mood. Written off before a ball was kicked, Gary O’Neil’s side opened their campaign with a statement win over Sunderland, upsetting the odds and injecting belief into their season from day one.
They do, however, have their own injury list to manage.
Jaden Philogene, who missed the win over Sunderland, remains out with an ankle problem. In midfield, Florentino Luis is sidelined by a calf injury after also sitting out the opener against the Black Cats. Azor Matusiwa, another absentee last week, continues to struggle with a thigh complaint and will not feature at Old Trafford.
Jack Taylor is also still on the treatment table with a knee injury, having been unavailable for that impressive first-day victory. Four players out, four gaps for O’Neil to plug as he looks to build on a flying start.
So both managers walk into Old Trafford knowing they are short-handed. United, wounded and under scrutiny. Ipswich, emboldened but depleted. One giant trying to steady itself, one underdog daring to believe. Which story gathers pace from here?
