Manchester United vs Ipswich: Mount Returns Ahead of Crucial Clash
Old Trafford expects a reaction. It also demands one.
Manchester United’s first home game of the season arrives under an early cloud after a blunt 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend, a performance that raised more questions than answers for Michael Carrick ahead of Ipswich’s visit on Sunday.
The good news for him is simple and significant: Mason Mount is back.
Mount Returns, Rashford Ready
Mount has returned to full training this week after the ankle injury he picked up against Paris Saint-Germain in pre-season. He is unlikely to be rushed straight into the starting XI, but just having him available changes the feel of a squad that looked flat and short of ideas at Hull.
Carrick at least emerged from that defeat without any fresh injuries, a small victory after a disrupted summer. Mount’s return is the headline boost. The other is Marcus Rashford.
Rashford came off the bench in the opener and is now pushing hard to start. That switch feels almost inevitable. United lacked pace, direct running and any genuine menace in the final third at Hull; Rashford offers all three.
If he comes in, Patrick Dorgu is the obvious casualty. That would likely see Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha, with Rashford providing the speed and penetration from the left that United so badly missed.
Benjamin Sesko is still easing his way back from a shin problem, so Cunha is expected to continue as the central striker.
Midfield Under the Microscope
The centre of the pitch is where Carrick’s biggest calls lie.
Kobbie Mainoo is pressing hard for a recall after watching Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos struggle to impose themselves against Hull. United lacked control, bite and rhythm in midfield; Ipswich will test all three again.
Carrick may look to restore Mainoo alongside Tielemans, asking the youngster to raise the tempo and tighten the structure while allowing Fernandes to drift higher and influence the game closer to goal. It would be a subtle tweak on paper, but one that could dramatically change United’s ability to dictate play.
At the back, there is far less room to experiment. Injuries continue to trim Carrick’s options, leaving the defensive unit largely picked for him rather than by him.
Baleba Delayed, Others Still Sidelined
One of the biggest summer arrivals will not be seen yet.
New £70 million signing Carlos Baleba must wait for his debut. The midfielder joined from Brighton already nursing an ankle ligament injury sustained during a pre-season training camp in Austria. The expectation is that he will be sidelined for “two or three weeks”.
He is not alone in the treatment room. Amad Diallo is also out for “a little bit longer”, while Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable, further narrowing Carrick’s scope for rotation.

Given the fitness picture and the need for a spark, Carrick’s side is likely to look like this:
