Manchester United Targets Manu Kone for Midfield Reinforcement

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is moving into its decisive phase – and all roads now point towards Roma’s Manu Kone.

Having already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, United are pushing to add a third central midfielder before the window closes. Kone has quickly moved towards the top of their list, and the timing is no accident.

For weeks, the 25-year-old asked his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation to put any transfer talks on ice until after the World Cup. With France’s campaign ending in Saturday’s third-place play-off against England, that self-imposed pause is about to lift. So is the temperature around his future.

United have already made contact with his entourage. Chelsea, too, have been circling, having raised Kone’s name with Roma during separate conversations involving Alejandro Garnacho. Now the Italian and English media both expect the interest to harden.

In Italy, Gazzetta dello Sport report that both Premier League clubs are poised to lodge formal offers in the coming days. The player, they say, is open to a move to Old Trafford and is willing to sign for United.

There is a complication – and it lives in Paris.

Kone’s dream move is Paris Saint-Germain. The Roma midfielder is understood to see the French champions as his ideal destination, a natural next step after breaking into the France national team and nailing down a starting role at this World Cup. But with PSG not currently in the frame and no proposal on the table, the door is swinging towards England.

Corriere dello Sport go further, describing United as frontrunners at this stage. Their line is clear: once Kone’s World Cup is over, a decision will follow quickly, with next week viewed as a potential turning point in the saga.

Roma’s stance is equally clear. They want around £47 million. That figure would represent a profit of roughly £34 million and, crucially, would do far more than just tidy up a balance sheet.

UEFA fined the club £5 million earlier in the summer for breaching the terms of their financial settlement and allowing their squad cost ratio to climb above 70%. A major sale such as Kone’s would go a long way to easing that pressure and effectively closing the chapter on their dispute with European football’s governing body.

Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the reality. Speaking to Radio Rai 1, the Roma head coach laid out the financial backdrop his club are working under this summer, stressing that budgets must be respected even after securing Champions League qualification.

“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team,” he said. “It’s undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years. I’d hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

Behind those words sits the name on everyone’s lips.

“Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He’s having a great World Cup,” Gasperini added. “He didn’t play with the France national team last year, but now he’s been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he’s put in.”

That rapid rise with France has not gone unnoticed in Manchester. United see a midfielder at the right age, with top-level experience and the athletic profile to complement what they already have. The fact that Kone shares an agency, Excellence Sport Nation, with France team-mates Aurelien Tchouameni, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan underlines the calibre of company he keeps.

For United, there is also a sense of timing. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford will step away from international duty after the same bronze-medal match that closes Kone’s tournament. Once that final whistle blows, club directors across Europe will move from scouting mode to signing mode.

Roma, facing financial fair play constraints and armed with a player whose value may never be higher, know this is the moment to cash in if they are going to. United, in need of one more big midfield piece, know this is the moment to strike.

Chelsea are in the frame, PSG linger in the background as the fantasy option, and Roma wait for the first serious bid to land.

The next week will tell whether Old Trafford becomes the stage for the next act of Manu Kone’s rise – or whether United’s midfield rebuild takes a sharp, unexpected turn.
