Manchester United’s Midfield Rebuild: Ugarte, Tonali, and Tchouameni

Manchester United’s summer is starting to look like a complete midfield reset rather than a simple refresh. Names are piling up, priorities are shifting, and even darts world champion Luke Littler is trying to nudge the club’s transfer strategy.

Ugarte Back on Galatasaray’s Radar?

Manuel Ugarte’s future lies away from Manchester United. That much is clear. The Uruguayan, who has attracted strong interest from Serie A, is expected to move on at the end of the season.

His next step might have come a year earlier. According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Ugarte was a “very concrete” topic at Galatasaray nearly 12 months ago, with talks held over a potential switch to Turkiye. The move stalled, the trail went cold, and Ugarte stayed put.

Now the question returns. With United reshaping their midfield and Ugarte heading for the exit, it remains to be seen whether the Turkish champions revive their interest ahead of the 2026/27 campaign or look elsewhere for their next anchor.

Luke Littler’s Plea to Tchouameni

Transfer chatter around Old Trafford has taken an unusual turn, with one of its loudest voices coming from the oche rather than the pitch.

Luke Littler, darts’ teenage phenomenon and a committed Manchester United fan, has publicly urged Aurelien Tchouameni to swap Real Madrid for Old Trafford and step into Casemiro’s role. Speaking to SportsBoom, the world champion referenced the recent training-ground flashpoints in Madrid before issuing a direct appeal.

“I'm sure you've seen some scrapping going on in Real Madrid and we're interested in Tchouameni. Come on Tchouameni, come on, replace Casemiro for that defence midfielder spot,” he said.

Littler didn’t stop there. He also backed Michael Carrick to become United’s permanent head coach, while acknowledging the fear among supporters that the former midfielder could follow a similar path to Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The sentiment is clear: United need a clear identity on the touchline and a commanding presence at the base of midfield.

Cole Palmer Off the Table

While the midfield dominates the agenda, one high-profile attacking name is slipping away.

Cole Palmer, outstanding for Chelsea this season, had been tentatively linked with a move to United. But club chiefs have now cooled any talk of a summer bid. According to The Mirror, Palmer is not viewed as a priority target, with the focus shifting decisively to midfield and defence after last summer’s heavy investment in the forward line.

That stance comes even as Chelsea face the real possibility of missing out on next season’s Champions League, a competition Palmer has publicly insisted the Blues should be competing in. United, though, appear ready to leave any opening on that front to others.

Tchouameni and a Fractured Real Madrid Dressing Room

Tchouameni’s name refuses to leave the Old Trafford rumour mill.

The French midfielder has struggled for consistent minutes at Real Madrid, and tension inside the dressing room has now spilled into public view. An altercation involving Tchouameni and Federico Valverde led to a Real statement confirming Valverde had been taken to hospital.

Spanish outlet AS has since reported that Real Madrid have “opened the exit door” to Tchouameni. The club are said to be acutely aware of fractures within the squad and are considering offloading several star players, with the 24-year-old among those who could be sacrificed.

For a United side crying out for a long-term defensive midfielder to succeed Casemiro, the opportunity is obvious. Whether they can turn that into a deal is another matter entirely.

Forest, Villa and a Shifting Market

While the spotlight lingers on Madrid, attention in Manchester has also turned to the Premier League’s middle tier.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has emerged as a serious target, with Manchester City currently leading the race for his signature. United, though, have been handed a subtle boost. Forest’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Aston Villa on Thursday ended their hopes of Champions League football next season, a blow that could weaken their hand in keeping key assets.

Anderson is not alone. Centre-back Murillo has also been linked with Old Trafford, and Forest’s European exit only increases the likelihood of at least one major sale. United, watching closely, know this is the kind of market they must exploit if they are to rebuild with both quality and depth.

Tonali, Juventus and United’s War Chest

At the top end of United’s midfield shortlist sits Sandro Tonali.

The Newcastle United playmaker has drawn interest from Juventus, but the Italian giants are struggling to match his price. Reports from Tuttomercatoweb claim Juve cannot reach the €100 million (£86m) asking fee, leaving the door open for United.

The same report states that United can afford that figure and are already “readying an offer”. It fits with a wider plan: three new midfielders are expected to arrive this summer, with around £150m reportedly allocated specifically for that department.

That level of investment signals more than a tweak. It points to a complete reimagining of United’s engine room, from the physical profile at the base to the creativity and control further forward.

Names like Ugarte, Tonali, Tchouameni, Anderson and Murillo are not just scattered rumours. They are pieces on a board that United’s hierarchy must arrange quickly and decisively.

Because once the window opens, hesitation will not just cost them targets. It could cost them the shape of their next era.
