Manchester United Must Move On from Marc Bernal as Barcelona Midfielder Decides to Stay
Manchester United’s search for another midfielder will have to look elsewhere. The door to Marc Bernal is not just closed; it’s been bolted from the inside at Camp Nou.
United, already busy in this window, had been heavily linked with the Barcelona youngster as part of a wider midfield reshuffle. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea in a £50million deal, while Youri Tielemans joined after the club triggered the £35m release clause in his Aston Villa contract. Two through the door, but the noise around a third has refused to die down.
Bernal’s name has sat near the top of that rumour pile for months. A 19-year-old with poise on the ball and a growing reputation in La Liga, he fits the modern United brief: young, technical, with resale value and room to grow. On paper, ideal. On the pitch, increasingly important for Barcelona.
Now comes the reality check.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Bernal has made a firm decision to stay at Barcelona this summer despite interest from Old Trafford. He is not short of admirers. Chelsea and Arsenal have also been credited with serious interest, while Roma and Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr are said to be watching closely.
None of it matters. Not this summer.
The stance from Barcelona is blunt. The club never had any intention of letting him go, and the player is described as having “absolute loyalty” to the La Liga champions. In other words: don’t bother calling.
The numbers back up that message. Bernal’s contract includes a €500m (£427.5m) release clause, a figure designed less as a negotiation starting point and more as a neon warning sign. Unless Barcelona soften their position and entertain a vastly lower offer, a transfer is virtually impossible. For now, his future is painted in Blaugrana.
That faith is rooted in what he delivered last season. Barcelona handed him a much bigger role, and he responded with 22 La Liga appearances as they wrestled the title back from Real Madrid. He grew into the campaign, trusted in tight games, used in big moments. This is not a prospect on the fringes; this is a teenager already woven into the first-team fabric.
He also stepped onto the Champions League stage, featuring six times and scoring once – against Newcastle United in the last 16. That goal, that stage, at 19, only sharpened interest across Europe. It also strengthened Barcelona’s resolve to ringfence him as a cornerstone of their next cycle.
For United, the message is clear. Any hope of prising Bernal away this summer has effectively been shut down, leaving the club’s football department to reassess their remaining options as the window ticks towards its September 1 deadline.
The need for another midfielder has not disappeared. Even with Santos and Tielemans on board, speculation continues around further reinforcements, with the club keen to balance creativity, control and legs in the middle of the pitch. Pre-season, overseen by Michael Carrick, will offer clues about how the new arrivals fit and where the gaps still lie.
United wanted Bernal as part of that evolution. Barcelona, and the player himself, have answered firmly.
The question now is not whether United can change his mind, but which midfielder becomes the next name on their list as the clock keeps winding down.
