Manchester United Pursue Teenage Defender Jorge Salinas
Manchester United have already ripped up much of Michael Carrick’s squad this summer, six signings through the door and counting, but their recruitment drive is not slowing. The next move could be a raid on Spain – and on one of La Liga’s most talked-about young defenders.
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, United are prepared to trigger the €16m (£14m) release clause of Racing Santander centre-back Jorge Salinas, a 19-year-old who has climbed rapidly from academy hopeful to first-team mainstay since his debut in 2024.
Barcelona have tracked the teenager and held an interest, but the Catalan club are not willing to go near that clause. United, the report claims, are. That alone changes the temperature of the chase.
United, Barca… and Atletico in the shadows
Salinas has quickly built a reputation as one of the standout young defenders in Spanish football, which has inevitably drawn in the usual giants. Barca’s reluctance to pay the clause has opened the door for United, yet they are not alone in circling.
Atletico Madrid are also in the frame. Their move, however, is tied to another Premier League deal. Sport Witness relay that Atleti are waiting for Matteo Ruggeri to complete a transfer to Aston Villa before making a push for Salinas. Villa are said to have agreed a package worth €18m plus €6m in bonuses – around £20m – with Atletico for Ruggeri.
Once that money lands, Atletico’s hand could be strengthened. For now, United hold a clear advantage: they are ready to go straight to the clause.
Racing dig their heels in – but only up to a point
Inside Racing, the message is defiant. The club do not want to sell, and their manager is adamant his key men share that stance.
Earlier this week, Racing boss Jorge Salinas – no relation to the defender – pushed back against the swirl of speculation surrounding Jorge Salinas and Gustavo Puerta.
“Their professionalism doesn't surprise me. What surprises me is that people are constantly talking about the departure of two of our players [Salinas and Puerta], when they have contracts and are our players," he said.
Then came the line that will encourage United and every other suitor in Europe.
“They're very important to us. I don't want them to leave. And they show every day that they don't either. But we know how this world works and there are release clauses. If a team comes along and pays the clause, they cease to be our players.”
That is the reality. Racing can argue, plead and plan, but they cannot negotiate around a number written into a contract. Hit €16m, and the decision moves to the player.
‘There’s little you can do if a giant appears’
Racing sporting director Chema Aragon struck a similar tone last week. Determined, but realistic.
“There's little you can do if a giant appears," he admitted. "We value the assets we have, we consider them important.
“For the club, at this time, there is no other option than to try to strengthen the team and not weaken it by losing stars. The reality is that the club that wants him has to come along with an offer.”
An offer is precisely what United are being tipped to place on the table, and not just any offer – one that removes Racing from the equation entirely.
Six signings in, Carrick’s rebuild already has a new spine. The pursuit of Jorge Salinas suggests United are not just shopping for the present, but trying to lock down the next decade of their defence. Whether the teenager chooses Old Trafford over the lure of Barcelona or the defensive school of Atletico will say plenty about how persuasive United look in this new era.
