Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £65m

Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba – and on their terms this time.

The club have agreed a deal with Brighton worth an initial £65m for the 22-year-old midfielder, who is due in Manchester this weekend for a medical. If all goes to plan, he will become the third new face in Michael Carrick’s reshaped engine room this window.

Baleba arrives as the specialist No 6, the midfield anchor United have chased for more than a year. He will slot in alongside Youri Tielemans, signed as a No 8 for £35m, and Andrey Santos, another holding option who cost an initial £48m with up to £2m in add-ons.

Even before any potential £5m bonuses are triggered, Baleba becomes United’s most expensive signing of the summer. His arrival takes their outlay in this window to £148m and underlines just how aggressively Carrick and the club have moved to rebuild the spine of the side.

Inside the club, there is quiet satisfaction at the numbers. United tried and failed to prise Baleba away last summer, when Brighton were pointing to the £115m they banked from Chelsea for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 as the benchmark. This time, United have secured their man for a fee they regard as serious value, both on the pitch and on the balance sheet.

Carrick has been clear for weeks about where he believes games are won and lost. Speaking before the agreement was finalised, he spelled out why the club were so determined to strengthen the middle of the pitch.

“I think it gives you the foundation of the team, you know,” he said. “I think the foundation of the team is important to be consistent, to be consistent through one game from start to finish, to be consistent over a period of time.

“You need a solid foundation through the middle of the team and trying and putting it together and getting that balance. But certainly, I think if you look at all the top teams over the years, all the great teams over the years, the spine of the team is really strong, you know.

“So we’re conscious of that, and I think we’ve got a good spine of the team right now. We can keep improving as we go in different ways and coaching and helping the boys and developing them, and I think we’re in a good place.”

Now the theory meets reality. With Baleba, Tielemans and Santos all in the building, Carrick finally has the tools to build the midfield he has been talking about. The question is no longer whether United can find their enforcer. It is how quickly this new spine can turn investment into dominance.
