Manchester United have added another young Welsh goalkeeper to their ranks, confirming the signing of Kit Margetson from Swansea City as the club also intensifies its push for Roma midfielder Manu Kone.
United move for Margetson – with Swansea compensated
Margetson, 19, arrives at Old Trafford after his contract with Championship side Swansea expired, with United agreeing a compensation package to cover his development years in South Wales. Swansea are entitled to remuneration after nurturing him from Under-15 level through to the fringes of the first team.
The Wales Under-21 international is steeped in goalkeeping pedigree. He is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now serves as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Kit has quietly built his own profile, though, away from the spotlight of the Premier League.
Last season he took his first real step into senior football, heading out on loan to Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads. It proved a breakthrough spell. He made 34 appearances, kept 10 clean sheets and played a key role in helping the Nomads qualify for European competition.
United hailed him as an “exciting young goalkeeper” in their official announcement, confirming the deal is subject to registration. Swansea echoed that sentiment, describing him as having played “an important part” in Connah’s Quay’s European push and noting his regular involvement with their wider senior squad. He even made the first-team matchday group for a fixture against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season.
There is a small discrepancy between the two clubs over his listed age – United describe him as 19, Swansea as 20 – but there is no debate over his trajectory. He has already earned youth caps for Wales and made his Under-21 debut against Belarus in March, another marker in a rapid rise from academy hopeful to Premier League signing.
For Swansea, it is the loss of a homegrown talent. For United, it is another calculated move in a clear rebuild of their goalkeeping department.
