A goalscorer hiding in plain sight
Tresoldi just finished as top scorer in the Belgian top flight with Club Brugge, hitting 23 goals and adding nine assists in all competitions. He turns 22 next month. Those are not the numbers of a journeyman enjoying a hot streak; they are the output of a young centre-forward whose graph is pointing sharply upwards.
Yes, the Jupiler Pro League is a step below the Premier League. Everyone at Old Trafford knows that. But Tresoldi has already tested himself on a bigger stage. He scored in the Champions League against Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Monaco, a trio of opponents that tends to expose pretenders quickly. He didn’t blink.
Brugge know exactly what they have. Belgium’s champions do not want to lose him this summer and have priced him accordingly. Roma have already moved, with reports in Belgium suggesting a bid worth up to €35m (£29m) is on the table. Local voices believe the player’s head could be turned before the window closes.
United, though, can change the conversation in a heartbeat.
United’s new market play
This is not the old United, lurching from marquee name to marquee name. Under the new recruitment strategy, the club is trying to live one step ahead of the market, signing players before they become £100m problems.
Tresoldi fits that brief. If his trajectory continues, his valuation will not stay in the £30–40m bracket for long.
The club have done this route from Belgium before. Senne Lammens arrived from the same division after chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton pushed his case and the data department signed off on the numbers. That move worked. It strengthened the belief that there is value to be found in a league that sits just off the glare of the biggest TV deals.
With Roma already at the table, United know what they are competing with. Financially, they can better it: more money up front, a stronger package in add-ons, and still nowhere near breaking the bank. An offer in the region of £35m is widely thought to be enough to prise Tresoldi away.
For a club staring at a 60-game season with only one recognised senior striker, that kind of fee starts to look less like a gamble and more like insurance.
A proper No. 9, not a makeshift solution
Right now, Benjamin Sesko stands alone as United’s only senior out-and-out centre-forward. He cannot carry the load by himself across four competitions. Not if United are serious about competing on multiple fronts.
There are players who can fill in. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Matheus Cunha can all operate through the middle, but they are not strikers by trade. Joshua Zirkzee has led the line in pre-season, yet he spends more time knitting play together between the lines than attacking the penalty spot. Useful, but different.
Tresoldi is something else. A proper centre-forward.
He stands 6ft 1in, moves cleverly across the line, and finishes with a ruthless edge. Most of his goals for Brugge last season came from inside the box, the area where United too often lacked presence when Sesko was missing or marked out of games. His instincts pull him towards the penalty spot, not away from it.
The pitch to him would be simple and powerful: join the biggest club in England, share the burden with Sesko, and grow with a squad being built to chase the Premier League title under Michael Carrick. This is not a role as a training-ground extra; there will be minutes, pressure, and a genuine fight for starts.
On the cusp of the elite
Tresoldi’s rise has not gone unnoticed at international level. He caught the eye with Germany at the Under-21 European Championship last year, then pushed so hard at club level that he almost made the senior Germany squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Julian Nagelsmann lifted the curtain on just how close he came.
“Nicolo Tresoldi was very, very close to making the squad. He’s not a classic target man, but a classic striker,” the Germany coach said. “He was extremely close, but ultimately he didn’t make the squad because we would have had to leave someone else out. That’s not easy.”
Nagelsmann made it clear the door will open for him soon. It is only a matter of when.
Born in Italy, Tresoldi moved to Germany at 13 to join Hannover’s academy, which is why he represents Germany at international level. That blend – Italian roots, German schooling, Belgian finishing school – has produced a forward with a sharp penalty-box instinct and a modern, mobile edge.
The sense around him is of a player standing just outside the elite, ready to step through.
Short-term temptation, long-term need
United fans, ever nostalgic and ever restless, have pushed for a different kind of move as the window ticks on. A late bid for Danny Welbeck has been a popular shout, especially with Chelsea in advanced talks to sign him. Welbeck, back at Old Trafford, as a one-season stopgap? It is an idea that tugs at the heart.
As a short-term fix, it would make sense. As a title-building strategy, it would not.
Carrick needs more than a plaster over a long-standing wound. He needs a forward line that can grow with him, peak with him, and still be there when United are ready to make a sustained push for the league again.
That is where Tresoldi comes back into focus. Young, productive, battle-tested in Europe, and still far from his ceiling.
Right now, he is a name that prompts confusion in some corridors at Carrington and excitement in others. If United decide to act, that balance will not last long.
