Manchester United’s summer has been framed by a midfield rebuild, but the quiet anxiety around Old Trafford sits a little wider – specifically, at left-back.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are already through the door, with one more midfielder expected before the overhaul in the middle is signed off. Yet for all that attention on the engine room, United head into a season with Champions League football and a swollen fixture list relying on a single specialist in a key defensive role.
Luke Shaw, 31, stands alone as the only natural left-back on the books. That is not a sustainable gamble for a club planning to go deep on multiple fronts.
Hall and Lewis-Skelly chase hits a wall
The plan was clear. United wanted youth on that flank – someone who could push Shaw now and quietly grow into his heir.
Lewis Hall was the preferred option. Newcastle United, though, slammed that door shut. As first revealed by Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have no interest in cashing in on Hall after already sanctioning major exits in Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
The stance has since been reinforced. David Ornstein stated that Newcastle are not expected to sell Hall in this window, underlining that the change of manager, with Eddie Howe gone, has only hardened their resolve to keep the defender and potentially lock him into a new deal.
United then explored another youthful route in Myles Lewis-Skelly. Arsenal’s response was even colder. According to Football Insider, the Gunners have no intention of parting with an academy product they rate highly, and certainly not to a direct Big Six rival.
Two targets. Two firm refusals. The blueprint of signing a young, long-term left-back suddenly looked less straightforward.
United pivot to Fulham’s Antonee Robinson
So United have turned their gaze to a different profile. Older, proven, and available at a fraction of the cost.
talkSPORT report that Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is now firmly on United’s radar. Their chief transfer reporter, Alex Crook, has flagged the USA international as a name to watch.
“Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international,” Crook said, noting that the defender is viewed as an experienced Premier League option who would “probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall” and is “on Manchester United’s radar as well.”
The contrast with Hall and Lewis-Skelly is stark. Robinson turns 29 in two days’ time. This would not be a signing shaped around the next decade. It would be about the next two or three seasons, about immediate reliability rather than long-term succession planning.
What Robinson does offer is top-flight experience, a robust athletic profile and, crucially, affordability. The figures floating around Hall and Lewis-Skelly – up to £60m – always hinted at difficult negotiations. Robinson, by comparison, represents a market opportunity that fits within a tighter budget while still addressing a clear tactical need.
United began the summer wanting the future at left-back. They may yet settle for the present – and with the Champions League looming and Shaw carrying the load alone, that compromise might define how far they can go this season.
