Manchester United Target Ederson for Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United have not waited for the transfer window to creak open. They have kicked the door in.
Fresh from clinching a long-awaited return to the Champions League, the club are now “very, very close” to striking a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with Fabrizio Romano detailing the state of play on a move that underlines INEOS’ intent to rebuild the spine of the team.
Ederson says yes – United haggle the rest
Reports in England this week suggested United had already agreed a £38 million fee with Atalanta. Romano has cooled that slightly. The finish line is in sight, but not yet crossed.
On his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist laid out the situation in blunt terms. The personal side is done. Ederson has agreed a five-year contract and given a clear green light to the move.
“The agreement, Manchester United with Ederson is done. The player said yes to Man United. The contract is ready, it's a five-year deal,” Romano said.
The message from the Brazilian is equally straightforward. He is waiting.
According to Romano, Ederson has told his camp: “I wait for United now. United are close to completing the agreement with Atalanta for 45 million euros. Payment terms are being discussed, installments, and all the rest, but Ederson is very, very, very close to becoming a new Manchester United player.
“What’s needed is Man United final approval. Man United have been working on this deal for weeks, but he’s among several targets they have.”
So the player is in. The structure of the deal is not. United and Atalanta are still ironing out the details around the €45m fee, with the schedule of payments and add-ons now the key battleground.
For INEOS, it is a familiar early test: spend decisively, but on their terms.
Champions League return sharpens the plan
United’s urgency makes sense. Their first appearance in the Champions League in three years comes with a warning attached. The last time they were in Europe’s top competition in its old format, they crashed out at the group stage.
That cannot happen again. Not for a club trying to re-establish itself among Europe’s elite. Not with the added scrutiny that comes with new ownership influence and a fanbase tired of false dawns.
Domestically, there is a platform to build from. A third-place finish in the Premier League, behind only Manchester City and Arsenal, has given Carrick and his staff something solid to lean on. But the extra strain of Champions League nights demands more depth, more quality, and a different level of control in midfield.
INEOS have marked central midfield as a priority zone. Ederson is one piece of that plan, not the whole puzzle. At 26, with his blend of energy and tactical discipline, he can stiffen United’s core, but the club do not see him as the sole answer to the Casemiro question.
The Casemiro conundrum and the hunt for a leader
Replacing Casemiro, or at least evolving beyond him, sits at the heart of United’s midfield rebuild. Ederson can help. He is unlikely to be crowned the heir.
That role could fall to Sandro Tonali.
Reports in Italy in recent days suggest Carrick has pushed hard for the Newcastle United midfielder, even wanting the club to move for the Italy international before finalising Ederson. The message is clear: Tonali is a priority, not a luxury.
A separate report from Italy claims United are also closing in on an agreement for the 26-year-old, who has rapidly climbed their list of preferred options. If Ederson brings legs and aggression, Tonali would bring tempo and authority.
The ambition does not stop there. Romano has confirmed that Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is viewed inside Old Trafford as the “dream” signing for the middle of the park. That dream, at least for now, runs into the reality of Madrid’s stance and the uncertainty over whether they would sanction a sale, even after his high-profile bust-up with Federico Valverde – another name mentioned in connection with United.
Dreams cost money. They also require opportunity. Tchouameni may be one for another window.
A crowded shortlist – and a race against rivals
Behind those headline names, the shortlist runs deep.
GIVEMESPORT sources indicate Carrick’s number one target is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. The problem? The England midfielder looks increasingly likely to head across town to Manchester City instead, a move that would sting both competitively and symbolically.
Then there is Mateus Fernandes at West Ham United. Relegation to the Championship has opened the door for his departure from the London Stadium, and United are watching closely as he prepares for a move away.
All of it points to the same conclusion. Ederson is not the end of a project. He is the start.
United are moving fast because they have to. The Champions League will not wait. Neither will City or Arsenal, who will strengthen again. Nor will the clubs circling the same midfielders United want.
For now, the focus is on final approval, signatures, and the last details of a €45m deal with Atalanta. Once Ederson walks through the door at Carrington, the question will come quickly:
Who is next?
