Manchester United Target Eduardo Camavinga Amid Mourinho's Message
Manchester United have been handed their clearest signal yet that Eduardo Camavinga could be prised away from Real Madrid – and it has come straight from Jose Mourinho.
The new Madrid coach has held direct talks with the French midfielder and, according to Spanish journalist Sergio Valentin, delivered a blunt message: Camavinga will struggle badly for minutes next season and does not sit at the heart of Mourinho’s plans.
For United, who have tracked the 21-year-old for months, that changes everything.
Mourinho makes his position clear
Back in May, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey revealed that United had identified Camavinga as a major summer target, with Real Madrid open to a sale. The midfielder, twice a LaLiga champion and twice a Champions League winner with Madrid, had already suffered the blow of missing out on France’s 2026 World Cup squad. The sense of a career at a crossroads has been building.
Bailey reported that United had spoken with Camavinga’s representatives, testing the water while INEOS mapped out a rebuild of Erik ten Hag’s midfield. Since then, Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, but the plan has always involved a third significant addition in the middle of the pitch.
That is where Camavinga comes in.
Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that United had held “conversations” with the player’s camp, though the line from Camavinga’s side remained consistent: he wanted to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabeu. Mourinho, newly installed in the Madrid dugout, was expected to sit down with him before any definitive call.
That meeting has now taken place.
Valentin, who reported the development on X, detailed Mourinho’s stance. The coach, he said, explained to Camavinga that breaking into his side will be “very tough,” stressed that he had already formed this view before even stepping into Valdebebas, and made it clear the club are exploring transfer options. Camavinga, for now, has told Madrid he does not want to leave.
The message from Mourinho, though, leaves little room for doubt.
Madrid ready to sell, United urged to move
Inside the Bernabeu hierarchy, the direction of travel is obvious. Madrid are looking to cash in. With plans in place to move for Rodri and with Camavinga having battled injury issues over the last two seasons, the Frenchman is sliding down a depth chart that has no room for sentiment.
If the club decide to sell, history shows they usually get their way.
That is why this latest twist will be greeted with quiet satisfaction at Old Trafford. United have long admired Camavinga’s blend of energy, press resistance and versatility, seeing him as a player who could anchor Michael Carrick’s structure for years while still offering drive in possession.
The dynamics have shifted. Before Mourinho’s intervention, United were dealing with a player determined to stay and a club still weighing up their options. Now they face a club actively seeking a buyer and a player who may soon have to choose between clinging on at Madrid or embracing a central role elsewhere.
United will not be alone in sensing opportunity, but they have already laid some groundwork with his agents. The next step is obvious: open formal talks with Real Madrid and test how serious the Spanish giants are about a sale.
