Manchester United Targets David Raum as Lewis Hall Deal Stalls
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp turn towards Germany, with RB Leipzig defender David Raum emerging as a leading candidate after Newcastle United shut the door on any move for Lewis Hall.
United have made reinforcing the left side of their defence a clear priority in the final weeks of the window. Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, and while he remains a key figure, the club want serious competition in that position as they prepare for a season back in the Champions League.
Hall had been identified internally as an ideal long-term option. The England youth international was approved as a top target, only for Newcastle to make their stance brutally clear: after a summer of high-profile exits at St James’ Park, Hall is not for sale. Not at any price that would tempt them now.
So United have pivoted. The interest in Hall has not disappeared, but the recruitment team know they cannot waste the window waiting for a deal that is not there. Attention has swung firmly towards alternatives, and Raum sits near the top of that list.
Raum Gives the Green Light
Raum is not a speculative name pulled from a database. The 28-year-old has already held talks with United in the past about a move to Old Trafford, and this time, the message from his side is clear: he is ready.
The Germany international, described in Bundesliga circles as one of the league’s standout left-backs, has entered the final year of his contract at RB Leipzig. His deal includes a release clause of around £34 million, a figure that has alerted clubs across Europe, but intermediaries now believe Leipzig could be persuaded to do business for under £30 million before the window closes.
For United, that combination of quality, experience and contract leverage makes Raum one of the most attractive options on the market. Crucially, it is understood he has given his approval to a potential move and is prepared to go head-to-head with Shaw for the starting role rather than arriving as a back-up.
United want a left-back who can play regularly, handle the demands of multiple competitions and raise the overall level of the squad. Raum’s profile fits that brief. He has been a consistent presence for Leipzig in recent seasons and has become a fixture for Germany, earning 39 caps since 2021.
Wilcox Shifts Focus, Vivell Knows the Player
Inside Old Trafford, the tone around Hall has changed. Jason Wilcox has effectively conceded that prising the youngster away from Newcastle in this window is not realistic, and that acceptance has cleared the way for a more aggressive push for alternatives.
That is where Raum’s existing relationships come into play.
United’s director of recruitment, who worked closely with Raum at RB Leipzig, knows exactly what he would be bringing into the dressing room. Back in 2024, he could barely hide his admiration when asked about the full-back’s rise, highlighting how quickly Raum had established himself as a regular for both club and country.
The assessment was glowing: quick, dynamic, a clean striker of the ball and a major threat from set pieces and crosses. Those are the traits that have made him such a valuable outlet on the left flank in Germany, and they are precisely the qualities United have lacked whenever Shaw has been unavailable.
Raum, at 28, would not be a project signing. He would arrive at his peak, battle-hardened, with Champions League and international experience behind him. For a United side trying to blend youth with proven performers, that balance is no small thing.
The clock on the window is ticking. Hall is locked away on Tyneside. Raum is available, willing and entering the final year of his deal. Now it is down to United to decide how decisively they want to move for a left-back who could shape that side of their defence for the next few seasons.
