Manchester United Pursue Tchouaméni as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United have gone back to Real Madrid for Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to let their first rejection end the conversation.

Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has left a clear gap at the base of United’s midfield. The club want a specialist to rebuild the structure around their defence, not just another body in the middle of the pitch. Tchouaméni, once again, sits near the top of that list.

From near extension to renewed doubt

Reports in England say Tchouaméni had looked firmly on track to stay at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid rebuffed approaches in the winter and again at the start of this summer window, with the Frenchman even edging close to a contract extension.

That was supposed to close the door. It hasn’t.

United have now returned to ask about his situation, aware that the profile they are chasing is rare and expensive. Tchouaméni is young, already proven at the highest level, and comfortable doing the unglamorous work that lets others shine. He can sit in front of the back line, dictate the tempo, and give a team balance that cannot be faked.

The missing piece in United’s midfield puzzle

The recruitment so far tells its own story. André Santos and Youri Tielemans both lean naturally towards the attacking side of midfield. They want the ball, they want to progress it, they want to create.

What United still lack is the player who stays behind when everyone else goes hunting.

Tchouaméni fits that brief. A natural defensive midfielder, a genuine anchor, he offers the kind of positional discipline and physical presence that could reshape United’s spine. On paper, he is exactly what they have been missing since Casemiro’s departure.

Mourinho’s plan, United’s problem

There is, however, a major obstacle. José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, and Real Madrid have treated him as part of their long-term core rather than a saleable asset.

That belief in his future role makes any deal extremely difficult. United are not just trying to buy a player; they are trying to prise away a midfielder a giant of Europe intends to build around.

The chase is alive again, but it will take more than interest and admiration to move Tchouaméni from Madrid.
