Manchester United U19s Dominate Sabah FK 5–0 with Gabriel Hat-Trick
Manchester United’s youngsters opened their UEFA Youth League campaign with a statement. A 5–0 dismantling of Sabah FK at Leigh Sports Village, and the scoreline barely captured the gulf.
With the U21s manager overseeing a makeshift U19s group for the competition, United flew out of the blocks and never let up, their intensity mirroring the senior side’s Champions League schedule this tournament shadows.
Lightning start
The first punch landed almost immediately. Inside two minutes, Jim Thwaites whipped in a wide free-kick, fizzed towards the near post. Amir Ibragimov darted across his marker and got the decisive touch, steering the ball home to set the tone for the afternoon.
Sabah barely had time to regroup before United came again. JJ Gabriel, already bristling with intent, drove a powerful effort from the edge of the box that forced the goalkeeper into a sharp tip over the bar. United were camped in Sabah’s half, recycling the ball, suffocating any attempt to build from the back.
When the visitors did break, it was through the relentless running of Shahin Ibrahimov. He surged forward on the counter more than once, but each time he looked up to find red shirts swarming and precious little support in blue.
The pressure told again on 16 minutes. Bendito Mantato’s cross skidded its way across the penalty area, evading defenders and landing perfectly for Jacob Watson. On his weaker right foot, Watson struck cleanly, drilling the ball home to double the lead and underline United’s control.
There was a setback soon after. In his first start of the season, Godwill Kukonki rolled his ankle and had to depart on 20 minutes, replaced by Rafe McCormack. The change did nothing to disrupt United’s rhythm.
Just before the break, they struck again. Junior Brown saw his effort blocked in a crowded box, the ball spilling loose. Gabriel reacted quickest, pouncing on the rebound and firing in to make it 3–0 on the stroke of half-time. United walked off with a commanding lead and the game already feeling out of Sabah’s reach.
Gabriel takes over
United did not ease off after the interval. They kept the tempo high, the ball zipping across the surface as Sabah retreated deeper and deeper. Brown almost added a fourth in style, cutting inside from the left and curling a superb effort towards the top-right corner, only to be denied by a brilliant save that briefly spared the visitors.
For a while, Sabah clung on. United created, probed, and shot at will, but the net stayed still. The dominance, though, never wavered.
Then Gabriel decided the margin needed to reflect the performance. Late in the half, he collected the ball in the box, coolly sidestepped his marker and guided a precise finish into the far-right corner. Composed, clinical, inevitable. 4–0.
Moments later, Thwaites produced one of the passes of the match. From deep, he threaded a superb through ball that sliced open the Sabah backline and released Gabriel in behind. One-on-one, the forward made no mistake, completing his hat-trick and sealing a 5–0 rout.
By the final whistle, the numbers were staggering. United had racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah did not register a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes. It was as close to total control as this level gets.
