Marc Cucurella's Rapid Move to Real Madrid
Marc Cucurella didn’t so much choose Real Madrid as get swept up by it.
The Spain international says the move happened at such speed he barely had time to look anywhere else. One call, one opening, and the decision was effectively made.
The left-back, unveiled this summer as one of the few reinforcements Jose Mourinho demanded, described a transfer that bypassed the usual soap opera that surrounds big-name moves.
“It all happened in a day and a half or two,” he told El Mundo. “As far as I’m concerned, it was much better that way – much quicker, with no headaches.”
For a player tracked by Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, that kind of clarity can be rare. The moment Real Madrid came to the table, the noise faded.
“An opportunity we couldn’t turn down”
Cucurella admits he weighed up other options, but only briefly. Once the Bernabeu appeared on the horizon, the debate ended.
“At the end of the day, playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts whatsoever,” he said.
Family opinion aligned with his own.
“I think both I and those around me – my family – were clear that this was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and I’m very happy with the decision we’ve made.”
For a defender who has built his reputation step by step, the move represents a leap into the elite. No drawn-out saga, no brinkmanship. Just a door opening and a player walking straight through it.
From La Masia to the Bernabeu
His past, of course, makes this transfer more than just another big signing.
Cucurella grew up at La Masia, shaped in Barcelona’s academy before carving out his career elsewhere. That background inevitably raised eyebrows when he chose the club that embodies Barca’s greatest rivalry.
He doesn’t pretend the decision is sentimental. It’s professional.
“Life has different stages. In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision and I have no doubts; I think it’s a huge step for me,” he said.
“When you’re a child, you dream of playing for the big clubs, and I think Real Madrid is one of them.
“It’s the team with the most Champions League titles in the world and I hope to win trophies with them and have a wonderful spell there.”
For Cucurella, the badge on his youth shirt matters less now than the scale of the stage he’s stepping onto.
Mourinho’s call
If Real Madrid’s pull set the direction, Jose Mourinho’s voice helped seal it.
The Portuguese coach, back at the Bernabeu and intent on reshaping key areas of the squad, identified the left-back slot as a priority and moved quickly for Cucurella.
“We had a chat and he told me he was really keen to work with me, that I’d settle in very well, and that Real Madrid was a great club,” the defender recalled.
“Then, that was it – he wished me all the best for the World Cup and said we’d see each other in Madrid.”
Reports in Spain suggested Mourinho pushed particularly hard, framing Cucurella as the left-back he wanted above all others. The player himself stayed away from the drama.
“Did he say, ‘It’s either you or I won’t sign any left-back’? No, I don’t know if he said that,” he replied when asked.
What he does know is that the coach called, made his intentions clear, and gave him a central role in his plans. For any player, that combination – Real Madrid and a manager who insists he wants you – is hard to resist.
The move may have taken less than 48 hours to complete, but its impact will be measured over seasons, in titles chased and nights under the Bernabeu lights.
