Marc Cucurella walked into Valdebebas with the look of a man who understands the weight of a shirt long before he pulls it on. La Masia may have shaped him, but it is the white of Real Madrid that now defines the biggest leap of his career.
Fresh from completing his medical, the Spanish full-back went straight to work under José Mourinho, taking part in his first training session before facing the cameras as a Real Madrid player for the first time. No theatrics. Just a clear message.
“It is a source of pride. I think few people can say they have worn this shirt,” he said in comments to Marca, the words carrying the mix of awe and steel that Madrid demand. “We have watched great legends. It is a club with a great history, and the biggest club in Europe.”
For a player raised in Barcelona’s academy, the symbolism is impossible to ignore. Yet Cucurella framed this move not as a betrayal of his past, but as the culmination of a journey he has been grinding through for years.
“Being here today is a privilege and an honour, and above all a reward for all the effort I have put in throughout my career,” he continued. “I have waited a long time, and it felt like it took a long time, but I am here now.”

For most of his life, Cucurella watched Real Madrid from the other side of the screen. Champions League nights. The noise of the Bernabéu. The impossible comebacks that turned into folklore.
“As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabéu, and all the Champions League titles the team has lifted,” he recalled.
Now he is no longer just another viewer. The stadium he watched on television is about to become his workplace, the stage on which he will be judged.
“As a player, and as a child starting to play football, it is very difficult to turn down the chance to play for a club like this,” he said. “The opportunity came to me and I did not hesitate for a moment. Getting the chance to live it from the inside and take part in it is a very big responsibility, but it is also a beautiful and important challenge.”
Responsibility and beauty. It is a neat summary of what Real Madrid represents to those who arrive with ambition rather than fear.
Early days under Mourinho
If the badge brings pressure, the man in the dugout brings edge. Mourinho has returned to Madrid with his usual intensity, and Cucurella’s first impression of the Portuguese is telling.
“A lot of confidence and spontaneity,” the defender said of the atmosphere the coach is fostering. “We have to do on the pitch what we are good at, and above all enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year.”

Cucurella is also already feeling the pull of the dressing room he is about to share. The messages from future teammates started to arrive as soon as the move edged closer, and those early conversations have eased the transition.
“I was already excited to get to know my teammates,” he admitted. “I spoke with some of them after they sent me messages. It has been a very good start.”
