Marcus Rashford's Barcelona Future in Doubt Amid Premier League Interest

Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona future has been thrown into doubt just as it seemed settled, and the Premier League’s elite are circling.

The Manchester United forward delivered a strong season on loan at the Nou Camp, finishing with 14 goals and 14 assists, but Barcelona are hesitating over the fee required to keep him. United have set a €30m option and a firm deadline of June 15. The clock is loud now.

Gordon deal changes the picture

Inside the club, the debate is sharp. Hansi Flick has been pushing hard for Rashford to stay, urging Barcelona’s hierarchy to complete the permanent transfer. He sees value, productivity and a player who has adapted quickly to a new league and a new role.

But just as that case was being made, Anthony Gordon arrived on the scene.

Barcelona have agreed a £70m deal with Newcastle for the England winger, a package that could rise to £80m with add-ons. Gordon had been on the verge of joining Bayern Munich, only for Barça to move decisively and hijack the transfer. According to Fabrizio Romano, Gordon is due to land in Barcelona today, with medical tests scheduled this afternoon.

That move has complicated everything for Rashford. Decision-makers at the club now accept that Gordon’s imminent arrival makes the prospect of keeping the United forward “more complicated”, despite Flick’s stance.

Rashford waits, Premier League watches

For Rashford and his camp, clarity has not yet arrived. The Athletic report that sources close to the player insist no final decision has been communicated, and they still believe there is a chance he remains at Barcelona next season, even with Gordon joining.

The problem lies in the boardroom. While Flick remains firmly in Rashford’s corner, others at the club are less convinced. Barcelona do not want to trigger the £26m option and are instead pushing for another loan. So far, Manchester United have refused to budge. The option is there. Take it or leave it.

United’s position is hardening for another reason. There is no appetite at Old Trafford to reintegrate Rashford under Michael Carrick. If Barcelona walk away from the permanent deal and United continue to reject a further loan, INEOS will have to find a new destination for one of their highest-profile assets.

Swap talk and a Premier League queue

That is where the market opens up. A swap deal with AC Milan has been floated, one that would see Rafael Leao head to Old Trafford. United are understood to be admirers of the Portugal international, with reports in Italy claiming Milan have reduced his asking price from £86m to around £43m. For now, it remains an idea rather than a negotiation, but it underlines United’s readiness to be creative.

Back in England, interest is more concrete. The Daily Mail report that Aston Villa, Tottenham and Arsenal have all discussed a potential move for Rashford. These are not speculative glances. These are clubs looking at an opportunity that might not have existed a few months ago.

Villa, with Champions League football on offer. Tottenham, reshaping under Ange Postecoglou. Arsenal, chasing marginal gains in a title race where every attacking option counts. Each can make a serious sporting case.

Yet Rashford’s preference is clear. The England international’s dream is to stay with Flick’s Barcelona, the club where he rebuilt his confidence and his numbers this season.

Whether that dream survives Barcelona’s financial calculations, Gordon’s arrival and United’s deadline is another matter. The next fortnight will decide if Rashford remains in Catalonia, returns to a Premier League rival, or becomes the centrepiece of a major European swap.

For a player of his profile, this is no longer just a transfer story. It is a career crossroads.
