Marcus Rashford Set to Return for Manchester United Against AC Milan
Marcus Rashford is poised to pull on a Manchester United shirt for the first time since December 2024 – and the stage could hardly be more intriguing.
The forward is expected to feature in Poland this weekend against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan, facing the coach who froze him out and ultimately pushed him towards loan spells away from Old Trafford. A pre-season friendly suddenly comes with a sharp edge.
Rashford’s route back
Rashford has been away a long time. Loans at Aston Villa and Barcelona have filled the gap since his last United appearance, his future repeatedly questioned while others carried the burden in attack. Now, under Michael Carrick, the door has opened again.
Carrick’s squad drew 1-1 with Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday night, but Rashford was nowhere near the pitch. Neither were Lisandro Martinez nor Kobbie Mainoo. The manager made it clear that was always the plan.
“Marcus, Licha and Kobbie only came back a couple of days ago so they're not quite ready but we can have them for the weekend,” Carrick said, outlining a careful build-up rather than any late setback.
He explained the workload behind the scenes. “We trained hard, the boys who came in, Marcus, Kobbie and Licha have trained really hard and we'll have a recovery day tomorrow.
“We’ll all recover tomorrow, train Friday and prepare for the game on Saturday [against Milan]. Again, we'll get the balance right of minutes."
The message is simple: no shortcuts, no risks, but the Milan game has been circled as the moment Rashford steps back into the fold.
Managing minutes, shaping a team
In Poland, Rashford, Martinez and Mainoo are all expected to come off the bench, their minutes handled with the same caution as those who went deep into the World Cup. This is about rhythm, not headlines.
Selection questions run right through the side. Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko are all doubts after missing the Leeds game, leaving Carrick to juggle his options again.
One area that could take shape, though, is midfield. Bruno Fernandes and summer signing Youri Tielemans are in line to start together for the first time, a potential glimpse of United’s new creative axis.
Up front, there is another decision to make. Matheus Cunha made his first pre-season appearance in midweek, while Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo have been operating either side of lone striker Bryan Mbeumo. Carrick must now decide whether to stick with that structure or begin to tilt the system towards Rashford’s eventual return as a regular starter.
