Marcus Rashford Supports Carragher as He Returns to Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has made his stance clear. He wants noise about his name to fade and the football to take over again.

The Manchester United forward, back at Old Trafford after a season on loan with Barcelona, publicly sided with Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender snapped at Gary Neville’s latest attempt to drag Rashford into the spotlight on the Stick to Football podcast.

Neville rounded off a segment by asking: “Marcus Rashford, what do we think? Last question.”

Carragher had heard enough.

“Oh ***********. Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god. It’s like the Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Rashford - there was like a little part of the podcast - the Trent part or the Rashford part.”

Neville tried to switch tack. “How is Trent?” he asked, prompting another exasperated “Oh my God!” from Carragher.

When Neville clarified, “No, but he’s come back to United,” Carragher shut it down: “So what? Oh my God. He’s just a good player for Man United!”

That was the clip Rashford chose to repost on X. His message was short, pointed and telling.

“Thanks, Jamie,” he wrote. “It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day,” finishing with a crying emoji that underlined the fatigue with the constant debate around him.

Rashford’s future looked elsewhere – until it didn’t

Only a few weeks ago, few would have confidently predicted Rashford starting the new Premier League season in a United shirt.

Barcelona, where he spent last season on loan, held a £26million option to buy. Given his numbers at Camp Nou – 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances, plus a key role in a La Liga title win, the first league crown of his career – a permanent move felt a realistic outcome.

Instead, Barça walked away from the clause and turned to Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. That decision nudged Rashford back towards Manchester and back into a dressing room that has changed around him.

His return has been quietly significant. He pulled on United colours for the first time in almost two years in a recent friendly against AC Milan, coming off the bench in defeat but drawing a warm reception. At 28, he is no longer the academy kid with the whirlwind debut story. He is now one of the senior figures, already acting as a mentor to several younger players.

Inside Carrick’s plans

The transfer window remains open until September 1, so the market can still twist. Inside the club, though, the feeling is shifting. The expectation that Rashford would be moved on has softened. The likelihood of him staying grows by the day.

Michael Carrick has already sat down for lengthy talks with the England international and has been clear about his place in the squad.

“He's our player, you know, and he's come back great. He's just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I've known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he's been in great spirits since he's been back.

“He's been back two or three days training and it's just pretty normal, to be honest. And we're looking forward to the start of the season.”

Normal is exactly what Rashford seems to crave. No transfer sagas, no daily dissection. Just matches.

He has not played in a Premier League fixture since December 2024, a statistic that underlines how disjointed his club journey has become. Yet his performances in Spain were strong enough to earn him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the recent World Cup, a reminder of his enduring quality at the highest level.

A fresh start, or one last act?

For now, Rashford is back in red, smiling in training, guiding youngsters and waiting for the competitive whistle.

Carrick’s side open their campaign away to newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22 (12:30pm BST). If Rashford does line up in that fixture, it will mark more than just another appearance. It will be the start of a season that has to answer a blunt question:

Is this Rashford’s revival at Manchester United, or his final audition before the next big move?
