Mark van Bommel appointed Belgium head coach for Euro 2028
Belgium have turned to a familiar rival to lead their next era, appointing former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as head coach on a deal running through Euro 2028.
The 49-year-old replaces Rudi Garcia, whose spell ended after Belgium’s quarter-final exit to eventual world champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Van Bommel will officially step into the role on 15 August, inheriting a squad rich in talent but still searching for a defining tournament run.
From Antwerp success to the Red Devils hot seat
Van Bommel arrives with fresh credit in the Belgian game. At Royal Antwerp he built a side that did far more than just compete. They dominated.
Across a two-year spell he delivered the Belgian league title, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup, turning Antwerp into a domestic force and sharpening his reputation as a demanding, front-foot coach. That body of work, achieved under the intense scrutiny of a club chasing its first title in decades, clearly resonated with decision-makers in Brussels.
Now he swaps the club’s red for the national team’s.
“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” Van Bommel said. “Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”
The message is clear: standards will be high, and excuses will be few.
Backed for his international pedigree
Inside the Belgian FA, the belief is that Van Bommel’s track record at the highest level can push this group beyond its current ceiling.
Sporting director Vincent Mannaert underlined why the federation made its move, pointing to Van Bommel’s “international experience as both a coach and player” as a key factor. The expectation is that a man who captained the Netherlands and played for giants at club level can translate that know-how into sharper tournament performances.
The Red Devils have spent the past decade hovering on the edge of greatness without quite stepping through. Van Bommel has been hired to change that storyline.
A Dutch core on the Belgian bench
Van Bommel will not be alone on this mission. He will be assisted by Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond, forming a staff steeped in Dutch football education but already well-versed in the Belgian landscape.
It is a bench built for detail and intensity: Zenden with his broad coaching experience, Martens and Robbemond bringing tactical and developmental expertise. The blend suggests Belgium want a staff that can both refine established stars and accelerate the next wave.
No gentle introduction
There will be no soft launch. Van Bommel’s early weeks will be defined by the Nations League, with Belgium thrown straight into high-stakes fixtures against Italy, France and Turkey across September and October.
Those matches will offer an immediate measure of where this new project stands. They will also test how quickly Van Bommel can imprint his ideas on a squad used to different voices and different rhythms.
Belgium have chosen a coach who once battled them as a rival captain. Now his task is to turn a talented generation into a ruthless one. With Euro 2028 already fixed on the horizon, there will be little patience for a long bedding-in period.
