Marshall Storms Back to Defeat VCU 3-1 in Thrilling Match
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then ripped through VCU.
Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd stormed back with three unanswered strikes to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their record to 2-0-2.
Early error, early punishment
Marshall’s night started with a jolt.
A defensive mistake left VCU’s Ty Johnson clean through on goal. He calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped it in, silencing the home crowd and handing the visitors a 1-0 lead before the match had settled.
On the touchline, Chris Grassie watched a team still learning each other’s habits get punished for a moment of confusion.
“We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need,” the Marshall head coach said afterward, pointing to the way his side communicates through movement and passing. For long stretches, that communication misfired. When it clicked, though, it tore VCU open.
Apolinario ignites the comeback
The response came quickly.
Eight minutes after the opener, Marshall found its spark. Goncalo Machado slid the ball into space for Thiago Apolinario, who didn’t hesitate. From nearly 40 yards out, the midfielder unleashed a drive that caught VCU keeper Manuel Monteiro off guard.
The shot flew in. 1-1. Apolinario’s third goal of the season, and suddenly the Herd had their rhythm.
VCU refused to fade. The Rams carved out chances throughout the first half, stretching Marshall’s back line and forcing Obert into action. His best moment before the break came in the 31st minute, when he produced a key save to keep the match level and send the teams into halftime tied.
Roberto flips the script
Whatever was said in the Marshall locker room at halftime took hold almost immediately.
Just under five minutes into the second half, at 49:26, the ball broke loose outside the 18-yard box. It fell to Joao Roberto. One touch, then a clean strike. Roberto drove his shot past Monteiro and into the net, turning a deficit into a 2-1 Marshall lead.
The game had flipped. Now VCU were the ones chasing.
Obert shuts the door, Romberg finishes it
The Rams pushed again, and the Herd needed their goalkeeper. Obert delivered.
In the 59th minute, he came up with another important stop to preserve the slender advantage. As the clock ticked down and tension grew, he stood tall again in the 85th, denying VCU a late equalizer and underlining his influence on the night.
With VCU committing numbers forward, the final blow came on a mistake at the back.
In the 90th minute, a Rams error left Carl Romberg alone through on goal. The Marshall attacker took full advantage, slotting home the third and final goal to seal a 3-1 victory and send the home fans into celebration.
Grassie had spoken about a “very good team in there somewhere” that needed time to gel. On Sunday night, against a dangerous VCU side, that team started to show through the cracks.

Marshall stays at Hoops Family Field for its next test, hosting Utah Valley on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
The question now is simple: as the communication sharpens and the new pieces lock into place, just how good can this Herd become?
