Martin O'Neill Hospital Update: Celtic Manager Expected to Return Soon
Martin O'Neill remains in hospital after what Celtic have described as a “small procedure”, with the 74-year-old expected to be discharged within the next couple of days.
The club have not disclosed any details about the nature of the operation, but moved to address growing speculation around their manager’s absence. O'Neill was on the touchline as recently as Monday, guiding Celtic to a 1-0 win over Dundee in their Scottish Premiership opener at Celtic Park.
“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital,” the club said in a statement on social media. “We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes. We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”
The message was brief but pointed. Celtic wanted to calm nerves without inviting further scrutiny. For a fanbase that has lived through O’Neill’s highs and long absence, any health bulletin about the veteran manager lands with weight.
O’Neill’s return to the Celtic dugout last season was one of the most dramatic twists in recent Scottish football history. Having not managed since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019, he reappeared in Glasgow last October, two decades on from his first, trophy-laden spell at the club. The trigger was Brendan Rodgers’ acrimonious resignation, which left Celtic scrambling for a steady hand and a familiar voice.
They found both in O’Neill. Initially installed on an interim basis, he steadied a listing season, then accelerated it. Celtic surged, reclaiming momentum and, eventually, silverware. His second stint delivered a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double, taking his personal haul with the club to eight and nine major honours.

Results faltered, pressure rose, and the Frenchman was dismissed, clearing the way for O’Neill to be summoned yet again.

That success forced a bigger decision in the summer. In June, Celtic moved to make the arrangement permanent, handing O’Neill a one-year contract with an option for a further year after talks with major shareholder Dermot Desmond. It was a bold call: a 74-year-old manager, out of frontline management for four years before his return, now trusted to drive the next phase of the club’s cycle.
Monday night’s narrow victory over Dundee looked like the first step of that new chapter. O’Neill, back in his natural habitat on the touchline, cajoling, gesturing, setting the tone. Now comes this unexpected pause.
For the moment, Celtic’s message is one of reassurance. A short stay in hospital. A small procedure. A planned release in “the next day or two”. No more, no less.
What happens after that will matter enormously. A club that has turned to O’Neill twice in a season needs him fit, visible and fully engaged as the demands of a title defence and domestic dominance sharpen. The stands have already made clear what they think of his return. The question now is how quickly their manager, once again central to Celtic’s identity, can stride back to the technical area and pick up where he left off.
