Martin O’Neill Extends Celtic Tenure to 2026–27
Martin O’Neill has signed a new one-year deal to stay on as Celtic manager, extending his second spell in charge into the 2026–27 season.
The agreement rewards a remarkable turnaround. O’Neill had walked away from the job when Wilfried Nancy was handed the reins on a permanent basis partway through last season. The Frenchman lasted just 33 days. When Celtic dismissed him, they turned back to the man who knows Parkhead as well as anyone. O’Neill stepped in, steadied a listing campaign and then drove the defending champions over the line.
The season ended in the kind of chaos Celtic fans live for. On the final day, with the title on the line, O’Neill’s side produced a league-clinching win over Hearts at a febrile Parkhead, sealing a League and Cup double that had looked distant earlier in the year. The Derry man had reclaimed the hot seat and, with it, the momentum of the club.
His decision to stay on also closes the door, for now, on one of the more intriguing managerial links of the summer. Robbie Keane, the Republic of Ireland’s record caps holder and all-time leading goalscorer, had been heavily connected with the position after leaving Ferencvaros.
Keane’s name carries weight in the east end of Glasgow. His prolific loan spell at Celtic Park in 2010 still lingers in the memory, and his coaching résumé includes league titles in Israel and Hungary. On paper, he looked a natural candidate to step in if Celtic chose a fresh direction.
The picture was more complicated off the pitch. Keane faced criticism from sections of the Celtic support over his previous association with Maccabi Tel Aviv. A statement opposing his possible appointment was said to have been signed by “dozens” of Celtic supporters’ groups, underlining the strength of feeling around the issue.
In the end, Celtic have opted for continuity and certainty. O’Neill, the man who walked back into the fire and delivered a double, will lead the champions into another campaign, with the roar of that final-day win over Hearts still echoing around Parkhead.
