Martin Terrier's Potential Return to Ligue 1: Rennes and Marseille Interested
Two years after swapping Brittany for the Bundesliga, Martin Terrier is edging towards a return to familiar ground.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward, now 29, is in talks over a move back to Ligue 1, with former club Rennes and rivals Marseille both pushing to bring him home, according to Foot Mercato.
A German chapter that never truly opened
Terrier left Rennes for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen with the profile of a late-blooming, goal-scoring wide forward. It never quite translated in Germany.
Seven goals in 44 appearances tell the story of a stop-start spell, his momentum repeatedly broken by fitness problems, including a serious Achilles tear last year. The Frenchman, still uncapped at international level, has three years left on his contract with the Werkself, but the idea of a reset in France has grown increasingly attractive.
Leverkusen turned into a winning machine under Alonso. Terrier, though, watched too much of it from the treatment room or the fringes.
Rennes reunion on the table
Rennes know exactly what they would be buying. Terrier delivered three outstanding seasons there, evolving into one of Ligue 1’s most dangerous forwards between 2020 and 2023.
Talks have opened with the Breton club as they assess their attacking options. With Switzerland international Breel Embolo drawing interest and the market moving quickly, Rennes are bracing for possible changes in their forward line and see Terrier as a proven solution rather than a gamble.
For the player, a return to a club where he produced his best football, in a league he knows inside out, has obvious appeal.
Marseille enter the race
Rennes, though, are not alone.
Marseille, preparing for a Europa League campaign and a rebuild in attack, have also set their sights on the former Lyon and Strasbourg man. The need is clear: both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood have departed, leaving a glaring hole at the top end of the pitch.
There is another factor pulling Terrier towards the Vélodrome. Bruno Genesio. The current OM manager coached him during his peak years at Rennes between 2021 and 2023 and knows exactly how to use his movement, timing and finishing in the final third.
For Marseille, chasing a forward who already understands the coach’s demands makes strategic sense. For Terrier, it offers continuity in a new city and on a bigger stage.
Two clubs, one familiar league, and a player at a crossroads. The next move will say a lot about how Martin Terrier wants the second half of his career to be defined.
