Mason Mount's Injury Scare: Impact on Manchester United's Pre-Season
Mason Mount handed Manchester United an untimely scare in Gothenburg as he limped out of their pre-season clash with Paris Saint-Germain after just 20 minutes, raising fresh questions over his fitness ahead of the new campaign.
The midfielder, one of the liveliest performers in Michael Carrick’s squad this summer, signalled discomfort early on and was withdrawn with Tyler Fletcher sent on in his place. Mount was able to jog from the pitch and held a brief discussion with United’s medical staff on the touchline, but the exact nature and severity of the problem remained unclear.
Carrick, with the 2026/27 Premier League season less than a fortnight away, was in no mood to gamble. Mount’s history demanded caution.
Another setback for a stop-start United career
Since his £55million move from Chelsea in 2023, the 27-year-old has never truly settled into a rhythm at Old Trafford. Injuries have repeatedly cut across his progress, limiting him to just 25 Premier League starts across three seasons.
This pre-season had felt different. While several team-mates returned late after World Cup duty, Mount hit the ground running. He has been sharp, busy, and influential in United’s warm-up games, one of the clear stand-outs in Carrick’s evolving midfield.
In Norway he even took the captain’s armband, embracing the responsibility. Mount spoke recently about his desire to lead by example, to set the tone with work rate rather than volume, and to guide the younger players around him. This summer was beginning to look like his reset.
Then came Gothenburg.
United were already trailing when he departed. Ibrahim Mbaye had struck in the second minute, punishing a sluggish start from Carrick’s side. The response took time, but the equaliser eventually arrived just after the half-hour: Amad Diallo drove at PSG, slipped the ball into space, and Bryan Mbeumo finished low into the corner to level it at 1-1.
The game swung, but United’s day darkened again after the break.
Heaton blow deepens Carrick’s concerns
Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, another experienced figure in a relatively young travelling squad, was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem. Dermot Mee came on to replace him, leaving Carrick facing two unwanted injury questions from a single friendly.
Pre-season had been relatively straightforward until then. United had been beaten 1-0 by Wrexham, then thrashed Rosenborg 5-0 before edging Atletico Madrid 2-1. The PSG fixture in Sweden marked another step up in opposition and intensity, the start of a demanding final stretch of preparation.
From here, United head to Ireland to face Leeds on Wednesday night, then on to Wroclaw to meet AC Milan next Saturday. After that, the talking stops. Hull City, newly promoted and eager to make a statement, await on August 22 when the Premier League season begins.
Carrick will want clarity on Mount’s condition long before then.
Midfield battle tightens
Even before this setback, Mount faced a fierce fight for his place. United have spent heavily again this summer, investing a combined £87million to bring in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, both tasked with lifting the quality and depth in central midfield.
Those arrivals change the landscape. Competition is no longer a buzzword; it is a reality Mount must navigate if he is to secure a regular starting role.
His performances in pre-season suggested he was ready for that battle. He looked fitter, sharper, more assertive, keen to show why United paid so heavily for him three years ago. He has also embraced a broader role within the group, talking openly about enjoying the responsibility of guiding younger players on and off the pitch.
That momentum is now at risk.
For Carrick, the hope is that Saturday’s withdrawal was nothing more than a precaution, a minor flare-up caught in time. For Mount, it is another anxious wait, another scan, another verdict that will shape his start to a season he can scarcely afford to watch from the sidelines.
