Melia's North American debut: Ireland draws with Canada in Montreal

Ireland’s tour of North America gave 18-year-old Melia another glimpse of the senior stage – and a late chance to win it – as Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side drew with Jesse Marsch’s Canada in Montreal.

The forward, a regular at Under-21 level before his January move from St Patrick’s Athletic, only received his first senior call-up earlier this month. He tasted his debut as a late substitute in the home friendly against Qatar. This time, he was thrown into a tighter contest, with World Cup preparations sharpening on both sides of the halfway line.

Canada struck first. With 23 minutes gone, Stephen Eustaquio whipped in a devilish corner that unsettled the Irish back line. The delivery skidded through the crowd, clipped the chest of Everton defender Jake O’Brien and spun agonisingly into his own net. One moment of hesitation, one goal down.

Ireland needed a response and finally found it on the hour. Chiedozie Ogbene drove at Canada with purpose, and when Troy Parrott won a penalty, the visitors had their route back. Maxime Crepeau guessed right to block Parrott’s spot-kick, but the danger didn’t end there. Ogbene reacted first, crashing in the rebound to drag Ireland level and tilt the momentum.

Ten minutes later, Melia arrived. On 70 minutes he replaced Benfica’s Jaden Umeh, slotting in alongside Parrott for the closing stretch. For a teenager still settling into senior international football, this was valuable time: a live rehearsal in a game that felt like a dress rehearsal for a World Cup.

His moment came on 83 minutes. Ireland broke at speed, Ogbene again the outlet on the counter. The winger picked out Melia inside the penalty area, the kind of pass young forwards dream about – space, time, the goal in front of them. Melia went low, looking to slide his finish past Crepeau, but the Canadian goalkeeper charged out and smothered the effort.

No fairytale winner, but a clear statement: the 18-year-old is already trusted in tight games, in hostile settings, with the result in the balance. With a World Cup on North American soil looming, this was the kind of night that can fast-track a young striker’s rise or leave him hungry for the next chance.
