Mexico Tops Group A with Narrow Win Over South Korea, Secures World Cup Knockout Spot

Mexico has sealed its place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup on home soil. A late goal by Luis Romo and a series of impressive saves from goalkeeper Raúl Rangel secured a 1-0 win against South Korea on Thursday, putting Mexico at the summit of Group A.

The opening half was largely uneventful, with Mexico managing just three shots and South Korea unable to test the goalkeeper. The lack of action frustrated the Mexican supporters, who expressed their displeasure with boos as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.

That halftime reaction seemed to spark the Mexican squad. Early in the second half, a critical error from Korean keeper Kim Seung-gyu allowed the ball to slip free after he tangled with a teammate while trying to catch it. Romo capitalized immediately, slotting the ball into an open net in the 50th minute.

Both sides pressed hard throughout the remainder of the match. Although Kim redeemed himself with several strong saves, South Korea could not find the equalizer. On the other end, Rangel kept Mexico's clean sheet intact, including a remarkable double save late in the 87th minute that thrilled the home crowd.

This result guarantees Mexico finishes atop Group A, granting them the advantage of playing their knockout matches on home turf. South Korea still has a chance to secure second place by earning at least a point against South Africa in their final group game.
