Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Last 32 with Win Over South Korea

Mexico took a step forward in the 2026 World Cup by becoming the first nation to qualify for the last 32. Their narrow victory against South Korea, held in Guadalajara, sealed their spot in the knockout rounds.

Match Highlights

The only goal came in the 50th minute when Mexican midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on a mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. After a collision with his teammate Lee Gi-hyuk, Kim spilled the ball, allowing Romo to tap it into an empty net.

South Korea’s best opportunity arrived late in the game. In the 87th minute, Cho Gue-sung headed close range, but Raul Rangel saved it. Rangel also stopped a follow-up shot from Yang Hyun-jun.

Earlier, South Korean captain Son Heung-min chipped the ball over Rangel, but his shot was cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez. The effort was disallowed due to an offside call.

Home Crowd Reacts

The passionate home crowd had voiced frustration at halftime after a lackluster first half. Their energy lifted the team, and Mexico nearly doubled the lead in the 75th minute when Raul Jimenez fired a shot from a tight angle that was saved.

Late substitute Obed Vargas also challenged Kim with a powerful strike, forcing another diving save.

Group Standings and Upcoming Matches

This win kept Mexico’s perfect record intact and confirmed their place as Group A winners. They will play their next two matches in Mexico City, including the round of 16 if they advance further. A possible opponent in that stage could be England, provided they top their group and win their initial knockout match.

Despite the loss, South Korea remain well-positioned to progress thanks to their earlier victory over the Czech Republic. Their next match is against South Africa on Thursday at 02:00 BST in Monterrey. Mexico will face the Czech Republic simultaneously in Mexico City.
