Milan vs Dortmund: The Race for Konstantinos Karetsas
Konstantinos Karetsas has just turned 18, but the fight around him is pure heavyweight.
On one side, Borussia Dortmund, relentless and organised, already deep in negotiations with KRC Genk. On the other, Milan, moving with less financial freedom but trying to win the player’s heart before they win the auction.
The race is very real. So is the price.

Dortmund have made the first concrete move. Several meetings with Genk are already in the books, and, according to Belgian outlet HLN, more talks are scheduled today. They are not just asking for information; they are trying to close.
Their opening proposal – €30m plus €5m in add-ons – went in, and came straight back. Rejected.
Genk value the Greece international at around €40m, bonuses included. It is a serious fee for a teenager, but one that fits Dortmund’s model: pay big for a high-ceiling talent, then build him into a star.
Milan, by contrast, are playing a different game.
Rather than leading with a bid they cannot yet back up, they have led with their manager. The same Belgian reports insist that Ruben Amorim has already called Karetsas directly, laying out his vision for the midfielder’s role in his project at San Siro.
No intermediaries. No vague promises. A coach-to-player pitch.
Vision versus velocity
This is where the approaches split.
Dortmund are moving quickly with Genk, trying to find the number that gets the deal done. They know the market, they know the competition, and they are acting like a club that does not want to leave the door open for anyone.
Milan, instead, are asking for time.
Amorim is understood to have urged Karetsas to wait, to hold off on committing while Milan work on outgoing transfers. Only after a sale can the Rossoneri “go all in” and match the level of investment Genk are demanding.
It is a gamble. The kind that can define a summer.
If Karetsas believes in Amorim’s plan and is willing to delay his next step, Milan stay in the race. If he chooses the clarity of Dortmund’s concrete negotiations, the Bundesliga side move into a commanding position.
A €40m decision
For Genk, the situation is simple: they have a creative midfielder rated at around €40m and at least two major clubs circling. For Karetsas, it is more nuanced.
Dortmund offer a proven pathway for young talent and are already at the negotiating table with a rejected bid and more talks coming. Milan offer a coach who has taken the time to speak to him personally and a promise of a central role, but must first free up funds.
The pressure is building on all sides.
Genk can afford to wait for the right number. Dortmund can afford to raise their offer. Milan cannot afford to misjudge the timing.
At 18, Karetsas stands at the centre of a tug-of-war between two of Europe’s most recognisable talent factories. Whoever wins him will not just secure a prospect, but send a message about where the next generation of creative midfielders chooses to grow.
