Milan Rejects Coventry's Bid for Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Milan have slammed the door on Coventry City’s attempt to reunite Ruben Loftus-Cheek with Frank Lampard.

According to Tuttosport, the newly promoted Premier League side tabled a €10 million offer for the 30-year-old midfielder, identifying him as a cornerstone signing for their return to the top flight. The answer from Milan was immediate and unequivocal: no.

Amorim draws a line

This wasn’t just a boardroom decision. Rúben Amorim personally stepped in to block the move.

The new Portuguese coach sees Loftus-Cheek as central to his plans for the 2026-27 season and made it clear he doesn’t want to lose him. For Amorim, the Englishman is not just another squad option; he is a tactical pillar.

The report states that Amorim values Loftus-Cheek’s versatility above all. His ability to operate between the lines and slot into different roles within the coach’s preferred system has turned him into a non-negotiable asset at San Siro. With that in mind, any talk of a summer sale has been shut down before it could gain momentum.

Lampard reunion blocked

The rejection also kills off what would have been one of the more intriguing subplots of the window: a reunion between Loftus-Cheek and Lampard.

The pair worked closely together at Chelsea, and Lampard pushed hard to bring a familiar face to the West Midlands as Coventry look to build a squad capable of surviving – and competing – in the Premier League. Instead, he’s been left empty-handed, at least for now.

Established in Serie A, but clock is ticking

Loftus-Cheek is now entering his fourth straight campaign in Serie A. Since joining Milan from Chelsea in a €19 million permanent deal in the summer of 2023, he has carved out a reputation as a powerful, reliable presence in the Rossoneri midfield. Physically dominant, tactically flexible, trusted by successive coaches – his profile fits exactly what Amorim wants.

Yet the story doesn’t end with a simple rejection.

The midfielder has less than a year left on his contract at San Siro. Milan’s stance in this window has been firm, but the calendar adds tension. Keep him now, risk losing him for nothing next summer. Cash in, and you weaken a coach’s key structure piece.

For the moment, Milan have chosen the coach and the project over the balance sheet. The next move is theirs: open renewal talks to protect his value, or gamble that Loftus-Cheek’s influence this season is worth the risk of watching him walk away for free.
